In an effort to gain ground in the social networking space, Playdom announced today that it has acquired MMORPG developer Acclaim Games.

Mind you, this isn’t the same Acclaim that you may fondly remember from the 8-bit NES era and as the creator of Turok. Following a $100K buyout in 2005, the company set sights on creating experiences tailored towards causal gamers under the helm of all-new management. Suffice to say, we feel a bit old.

Acclaim reckons the partnership with Playdom is a “natural fit.”  At present, the company is currently hard at work on a Facebook game slated to launch later this summer, poised to complement its growing portfolio of social networking efforts, the most recent being a browser-based Guitar Hero and Rock Band-esque game entitled RockFree.
