May NPD: Nintendomination

The May NPD results are up, and they once again prove that Nintendo is dominating the video game market. The Nintendo DS, which shows no signs of slowing down, sold a staggering 423,150 units during the month. Sales data for the Wii was equally as impressive, clocking in at 338,278 units sold.

Meanwhile, on Sony’s end of the spectrum, the PSP sold an impressive 221,120 units, a little more than half of what the DS sold. The PS3, on the other hand, sold around 81,604 units, which is unfortunately close to 1K lower than last month’s sales. Sony’s last-gen PS2 took fourth place with 187,765 units sold, surpassing both the GameCube which sold 10,728 units, and the GBA which sold 80,554 units.

Finally, Microsoft had a solid showing with 154,932 Xbox 360 units sold. Overall, video game sales saw a near-50 percent increase. Most of which is thanks to Nintendo.

Top three software titles for the month were Pokemon Diamond, Mario Party 8, and Spider-Man 3. Interestingly, despite the negative press it got, Mario Party 8 sold nearly 314,000 copies. More sales results after the jump.

It's nice to see just how much, in only a year, the gaming industry has grown. I know there's the new consoles now as opposed to last year this time (no Wii or PS3) but still.
