E3 2007: Twilight Princess The Last Wii Zelda?

The release of Twilight Princess on the Wii was a first for Nintendo. As per tradition, Zelda games are usually released much later in a new console’s lifespan. The game, while well received here the US, performed under expectations in Japan. Does this mean we will not see a new Wii Zelda in the near future? Possibly. When asked if Twilight Princess would be the last Wii Zelda, director Eiji Aonuma said:
I can’t say, but I guess for now, maybe, yeah [laughs]. Not to say that it’s going to be the final game. There’s still a lot of potential with the Wii so there’s still a possibility that there could be another Zelda for it. We do have some ideas in the works, but I can’t say for sure because none of them have been approved and we’re still very much in the planning process, so I hope you look forward to whatever comes out.
Not surprising to say the least. It’s obvious Nintendo wants to re-think the Zelda series, and launching TP at the Wii’s launch has allowed them to do just that. It’s not like we are suffering from a drought of Zelda titles either, with Phantom Hourglass coming out for the DS this October.
