Q-Games’ president Dylan Cuthbert offered up two pieces of news for PixelJunk fans today, revealing that PixelJunk Monsters 2nd Lap is hitting PSN later this spring and already-released PSP title PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe is making the jump to UMD.

More than a mere extension to the original PixelJunk Racers, 2nd Lap is a brand-new game that introduces a ghost attack mode, in addition to trophy support. Exclusive to PS3, the top-down racer is slated to hit PS3 later this spring. No word on pricing yet, however.

The physical release PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe is due out April 27 and will carry the same budget price point as its downloadable brethren at $19.99. As you may recall, this comes following dismal sales of the original PSN release, which subsequently led Cuthbert to question the value of investing further in their PSP presence. Here’s hoping the UMD release will give PJM Deluxe the attention it deserves.

Always the perfectionist, delays are almost second nature to famed gamed designer Hideo Kojima. PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is no exception. Previously scheduled for a May 25 debut in North America, Konami announced today that Snake’s latest portable outing will arrive on June 8. Don’t fret kiddos: it’s only a two week setback, nothing major.

In related news, Sony lifted the wraps on a limited edition PSP bundle package. Pictured above, it includes a Sprited Green PSP unit, a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, a copy of Peace Walker on UMD disc, a US-only voucher for a yet-to-be-named downloadable movie, and another voucher redeemable on PSN for “special in-game content.” It’ll carry a suggested retail price of $199.99.

For PSPgo owners and those not interested in physical media, the revised June 8 release will also coincide with the digital release of Peace Walker on PSN. Note that this date applies to North America only. Those in the UK will have to wait until June 18.

Square Enix today announced that Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep is heading stateside this summer.

Serving as a PSP-exclusive prequel to the original Square and Disney mashup that started it all, Birth By Sleep follows the story of three youngsters — Terra, Ventus and Aqua. With each character faced with a distinct destiny, the trio find themselves thrust into a crisis affecting worlds far beyond their own following the disappearance of a Keyblade Master known as Xehanort. Playing through with each character is the only way experience the entire story.

Additionally, this Kingdom Hearts entry marks the introduction of several Disney worlds and characters never before seen in previous installments, including Sleeping Beauty’s Enchanted Dominion, the Dwarf Woodlands from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Deep Space from Lilo and Stitch.

Square Enix is also throwing in content exclusive to the North American localization, including an extra boss and additional multiplayer options. Makes the long wait a tad more bearable.

It’s safe to say that Codemasters has had a rough time with the PSP. Speaking to Edge, company VP Gavin Cheshire has lashed out at Sony’s flagship portable platform, calling it a “bollocking useless waste of space.” These fighting words rage on in the full quote:

Well, speaking as a person who bought a PSP, the problem was that I always thought, because it was a better screen than iPod’s, that I’d be doing more with it. But it was such a bollocking useless waste of space; just getting stuff on it was ridiculous. That was its downfall.

Relatively speaking, we didn’t do too badly on F1 PSP. But regarding the future, I think they’ve got – well… no. PSP Go’s a lovely device, really smart, but our senior VP bought one the day it came out and has a great story, because he ended up on some customer support line just trying to do basic stuff. He had to re-download his software, do an immediate firmware update, and that’s your user experience. Sony just hasn’t got it right. Stuff like that will make people leave it alone.

Zing. Do Cheshire’s points hold any merit, though? While Codemasters isn’t the first to express their disdain for the PSP, few developers have quipped in such an outspoken manner.

Like any platform, the PSP is far from perfect. Majority of studios seem to be relatively pleased with it. Apart from rampant piracy that is, which remains as an issue that still has yet to be curbed. Although Sony is actively exploring solutions, we’re told.

A user who goes by the pseudonym of Flasher over at French site PSPGen recently cracked open his newly bought PSP, uncovering a never-before-seen motherboard revision: TA-093. Highlights include the removal of a micro-processing unit that was present on earlier boards and a modified UMD latching mechanism. In addition, other on-board components have been shrunk or removed entirely.

For an up-close look at the differences, above is a comparison snapshot of a TA-090 and TA-093 board.

Looks like Sony is employing cost-cutting measures on the hardware front with these newer units. That leads us to ponder. Is Sony paving the way for a smaller PSP, perhaps? Certainly is a possibility, given their fervent stance towards incremental hardware refreshes. Murmurs of a possible UMD-touting PSP-4000 broke out during last year’s Tokyo Game Show.

Ubisoft is taking Olympic gold medalist Shaun White into the virtual skateboarding genre with Shaun White: Skateboarding. While Shaun is perhaps best known for his prowess in the extreme sport of snowboarding, he isn’t too shabby of a skateboarder either, having walked away with the prestigious honorary achievement of a gold medal during both the Summer and Winter X Games.

“I can’t describe how excited I am about the skateboard game,” said Shaun White. “We’ve been working on it for a while now and it’s ready to melt minds.”

Melt minds? We’re sold. In all seriousness, though, this could prove to be a worthy competitor to EA’s Skate. Not to mention, given that the Tony Hawk franchise has seemingly been stuck in a rut ever since it left Neversoft’s hands, fresh attempts to break into this sport are more than welcomed.

On the whole, 2009 was a great year for the software side of PSP business, with home console mainstays like MotorStorm and LittleBigPlanet making the jump to a portable platform. Not surprisingly, SCEA Senior VP of Publisher Relations Rob Dyer says Sony intents to propel that momentum even further this year with a heap of “big titles” on the horizon.

According to Dyer, Sony will showcase its commitment towards its six year old PSP platform with a number of significant announcements prepped across the trade and media events of GDC, Destination PlayStation and E3 2010.

I won’t go through the whole lineup because I want our third-party partners to make those announcements, but there are some big, big titles coming out this year and you’ll see those announcements at GDC, DPS (Destination PlayStation) or E3.

Dyer also noted that Sony is working “diligently to bring about some solutions” in regards to alleviating rampant piracy on the PSP. We’ve already seen SOCOM 3 employ a PSN activation scheme to curb used game sales and subsequently fend off pirates. Sounds as if we’ll see more attempts on that front soon-ish, if Dyer’s comment on the situation is any indication.

With the PSP platform cracked wide open, Sony is turning to new ways to thwart piracy, the likes of which include something PC gamers are all-too familiar with: online activation. Released to retailers earlier this week, SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 requires players to validate their copy with a voucher code that comes pre-packaged with each copy of the title in order to access its online component, a first for any PSP title.

While digital copies purchased from the PlayStation Store come pre-activated upon download, those who pick up the title used must pony up $20 for a voucher code if they want to play online. An intentional blow to the second-hand market, we’re sure.

SCEA marketing head John Koller described the approach as a “trial run,” further noting that if it is successful, we could very well see other titles take advantage of this. DRM doesn’t exactly put a grin on our face, but all things considered, Sony’s method of identifying legit buyers is far from intrusive. Hope it works out.

D3Publisher today announced that fast-paced action title God Eater will grace the PSP in Q3 2010. Set amid a barren post-apocalyptic world, the title tasks players with rising up against carnage-fueled mutated beasts responsible for dismantling the earth, leaving behind nothing more than a bleak wasteland. Collectively known as the Aragami, humanity’s only hope against these diabolical creatures are the altruistic God Eaters.

Armed with divine Jinki weapons, players set out to restore peace and order across more than “100 exciting missions.”Taking a page out of Monster Hunter’s highly successful formula, players will find materials during their journey prime for customizing weapons, shields and bullets. Synthesizing weaponry and related equipment offers stat-attribute increases in return. Additionally, a robust multiplayer component is promised, allowing up to four players to join the hunt together through adhoc connection or online via adhocParty on PS3.

Developed by Namco Bandai, a demo of God Eater was released in Japan to much fanfare, recording over 1.5 million downloads according to D3Publisher VP Pete Andrews.

After the prosperous month of December, industry sales have fallen back into a slump. Combined hardware and software figures from NPD for January show a 13 percent year-on-year decline, with lone hardware sales taking a 21 percent hit compared to 2008. Definitely not something to pumped up about.

On the bright side of things, it wasn’t a terrible month for software. Categorically, sales were still down compared to last year, but New Super Mario Bros. and BioWare’s critically acclaimed decision-making RPG opus Mass Effect 2 both shifted over a half million units. Well deserved earnings all across the board. See the full breakdown of figures past the cut.

While 2009 was a better year for EA, there’s still room for improvement, considering the gaming behemoth took a hit on its profit margins yet again. Less severe of a hit compared to 2008, but still significant. As such, EA is cutting costs wherever possible, beginning with its Partners label. In a conference call with analysts, COO John Schappert revealed that the company is scaling back on its distribution efforts for third-parties, instead placing a renewed focus on internal EA titles. Makes sense – that’s where the money is, after all.

While we have great relationships with our partners, we are modeling a reduction in our distribution business as we concentrate on higher-margin EA owned titles and digital initiatives.

EA was quick to point out that its well-received Partners program is not being scrapped entirely. Notably, it still plans to publish external titles under the label when appropriate, such as Crysis 2 and a yet-to-be named Epic shooter. However, Rock Band may be on its way out, seeing as there was no mention of the franchise on its latest release schedule. Going forward, expect a more stringent approval process for studios that turn to EA for marketing aid.

It appears NIS America ran into a bit of a legal snafu over the release of its wacky dungeon crawler Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman!: What Did I Do To Deserve This? By way of a press release, word is the game’s title drummed up a “conflict of interest” with another unnamed IP holder, forcing NIS to issue a name change. Batman, anyone?

As a result, the title will now be known under the decidedly less catchy yet still amusing identity of What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!? NIS has temporarily ceased distribution of the title on the PlayStation Store, noting that it’ll return once the name switcheroo is complete. Seeing as a UMD release never made it stateside, no adjustments will have to be made at retail. Although, a physical copy did hit Europe, so collector types might want to snatch that up if NIS decides to yank it off store shelves to avoid further legal complications.

Subsequently, the sequel has been delayed till May 4, with its name being changed to What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!? 2, reflecting that of the renamed original. Poor NIS, can’t help but feel sorry for them over this.

Let’s face it, the PSP’s approach to notifying end-users that their battery is in need of a recharge isn’t exactly obvious, especially when your thumb is covering the LED power indicator at times. In response to this dilemma, homebrew developer Zack has devised a custom firmware plugin dubbed Battery Warning Plugin. As the name implies, it displays a on-screen warning message when remaining battery power reaches a certain threshold, in this case 15 percent.

Quite handy, we say. Now you’ll have ample time to react to a low battery in midst of playing a game. Zack notes that future releases will incorporate a configuration manager. Grab the latest build at the link below.

As part of a restructuring plan at Sony Liverpool, the studio responsible for the PlayStation-centric WipEout series, it has been confirmed that several projects are in the process of being axed due to “project prioritisation.” However, rumor has it that this plan will extend past the mere scrapping of projects, possibly resulting in a headcount reduction and a rather significant one at that.

A source close to Develop who was reportedly affected by the ongoing cuts says that as much as half of Liverpool’s workforce may be forced to part ways, bleakly noting that Sony’s restructuring initiative was “looking heavy.” Not encouraging to say the least.

Sony has yet to comment on the supposed layoffs at Liverpool. Always a shame to see this happen, especially to such a prestigious studio responsible for countless hits.

Famed Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has weighed in on the practice of delaying titles, which he feels is the ultimate crime as a game developer.

I always preach to the staff, ‘You must not have a delay after a release date has been announced. There is no greater crime as a game developer.

Official announcement of a release date is nothing less than a promise to fans and business partners. In other words, a release date change is like betraying the expectations of everyone.

It probably takes a long time to earn back trust that has been lost. However we will work hard, with the hope that we will one day earn the support of everyone again.

Kojima words are centered on the recent delay of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, which was pushed back in Japan from March to April 29. Given his perfectionism, we weren’t exactly surprised at the setback. However, Kojima brings up a solid point, delays should always be avoided unless the situation absolutely calls for one.

Makes us wonder if the onslaught of delays we witnessed close to Modern Warfare 2’s release were absolutely necessary. Apart from a few special cases, I’d put the majority down to hasty planning. These days, it feels as if a large number of studios commit to a date far too early. Sure, this keeps shareholders happy, but doing so incurs the risk of disappointing loyal fans in the event of an unexpected snag midway into development.

Furthermore, the qualifications call for experience with creating engaging game experiences – preferably in the realm of first and third-person shooters. While still not a direct confirmation, those two tidbits are rather revealing, considering that Bizarre has been previously rumored to be working on a licensed 007 effort. All bets are on Bond.

The job listing made no mention of what platforms the applicant will be responsible for working with, but knowing Activision, this will undoubtedly be a multiplatform affair.

The NPD Group today released its year-end sales report. No matter how you construe the numbers, 2009 bowed out with a strong showing for all console hardware manufactures. Hardware sales were up a staggering 16 percent in December of last year, with Nintendo notably shifting an excess of 3.8 million Wii and 3.3 million DS units. Those are record numbers for both platforms as far as monthly sales go. Software sales took a slight tumble, down 7 percent from December of 2008.

Despite marginal gains over last December, industry sales declined from a full year-over-year perspective, recording $19.66 billion in sales compared to 2008’s $21.4 billion. Clearly the weakened economy dampened potential growth, but if last month’s figures are any indication, the road ahead looks convincingly bright for 2010. Hit the jump for the complete breakdown of sales figures.

Oh, and it looks like Reggie won that little bet. New Super Mario Bros. sold more units than Modern Warfare 2 on both PS3 and Xbox 360 combined. Impressive.

When the Assassin’s Creed franchise comes to mind, you think of a large-scale single player experience. Ubisoft is looking to broaden that narrow view with the next “episode” in the series, which is said to feature an online multiplayer component. This tantalizing tidbit was casually dropped in the company’s revised 2009-10 outlook and as such further details are nonexistent at the moment. Certainly piques our interest, though.

Ubisoft was keen to mention that this upcoming installment is a new episode, not a new entry, ruling out the possibility that it will be called Assassin’s Creed 3. The title is due out in the company’s 2010-11 fiscal year, meaning the latest it could hit is March of next year. Platform specifics were not divulged. More details will follow soon, we’re sure.

Namco Bandai’s long-running combat flight sim series is primed to take flight on PSP for a second time in Ace Combat: Joint Assault, the company announced today. Featuring more than 40 fully licensed aircraft, players will find themselves engaging in intense dog-fights across a number of real-world locations, including Tokyo, San Francisco, and London.

Namco has implemented an advanced enemy AI that tactically adapts accordingly towards decisions made while progressing through a campaign. In addition to an adrenaline-fueled singe player experience, Joint Assault features a variety of multiplayer modes accessible via ad-hoc or infrastructure (WiFi) connection.

In an interesting approach towards co-op, players can take down enemy forces with up to three friends cooperatively in campaign mode, breaking up into divided teams and simultaneously complete mission objectives on two separate maps. Additionally, Joint Assault will support eight-player adversarial matches. Look for the title to land on PSP “later this year.” Screenshots can be found after the break.

Times have taken a troubling turn at Rockstar’s San Diego branch. According to Joystiq’s inside source at the studio, 2009 saw the firing of several key developers connected to the Midnight Club series, including vets Jay Panek and Mark Garone. Other people followed and quit, primarily due to being fed up with how the company handled Midnight Club: LA but also as a result of a lack of interest in working on Red Dead: Redemption.

With the core team essentially dissolved, the future of Midnight Club is an uncertainty. Poor management practices at Rockstar San Diego has led to a state of peril, with the wives of employees lamenting over inadequate working conditions coupled with unrealistic deadlines and long hours. The unethical neglect is beginning to take its toll on employee’s at the studio, with those affected prepped to take legal action if the situation does not improve within the “upcoming weeks.”

Considering the Midnight Club franchise is one of Rockstar’s top earners, there’s little doubt that parent company Take-Two is watching the developments surrounding this situation closely. Rockstar, for its part, has yet to issue an official comment in response to the allegations.

London-based development studio Mediatonic has chosen Sony’s Minis platform to release their first game, entitled Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess! An upwards-scrolling platformer presented with clean and vivid 2D visuals, players assume the role of a demon known as “The Duke.” Setting out for revenge under the pretense that monsters were probably responsible for the kidnapping of her majesty, players are tasked with taking down monsters with brute force by crashing into them three times. Platforms are scattered across each level in an escaling fashion, which when touched allow players to build up a combo, in turn beefing up speed and power attributes.

Weighing in at a tad over 95MB, Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess! will be one of the largest Mini titles to grace the PlayStation Store yet. And as a PSP Mini, it is playable on both PSP and PS3, thanks to Sony’s most recent firmware update on the PS3 side that brought cross-compatibility.

Look for Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess! to join the Minis lineup in February 2010 in all its monster slaying glory. More screenshots can be viewed after the break.

Despite rumors of a PSP-4000 on the horizon and a greater focus being placed towards digital distribution with the PSPgo, Sony isn’t finished with refreshing its PSP-3000 product lineup in Japan. Meet the Blossom Pink PSP, a eloquent new color sure to be an object of desire amongst feminine-minded consumers. Scheduled for a March 4 drop date, it’ll debut at a 16,800 yen price point after tax, which Sony labels as a “limited offer.”

With the introduction of the new elegant Blossom Pink color that conjures the image of the blooming flowers, users will be able to select from a wider selection to match their life-style, fashion or preferences to enjoy entertainment on the go.

Looks strikingly similar to the Rose Pink shaded model that hit Japan back in 2007 with a slightly deeper shade of pink, resulting from the fact that it is matte-styled in contrast to the shiny, shimmering surface of PSP-2000 units.

Publisher Atlus today announced plans to bring Metal Slug XX to PSP, an enhanced version of DS title Metal Slug 7 with the much-welcomed addition of cooperative play at a palatable budget price to boot: $19.99.

Players can choose between six characters from the Metal Slug universe, engaging in frantic non-stop shoot em’ up action that fans of the series have come to expect, backed by lush 2D visuals. To round out the package a “Combat School” gameplay mode is due for inclusion, which features 70 challenge centric missions. Additionally, a seventh playable character – Leona – will be available at launch as DLC for $0.99 from the PlayStation Store.

Metal Slug XX is slated to hit retailers February 23 on UMD. No plans have been made for a digital equivalent at this point, meaning PSPgo owners are out of luck for now.

Unlike its PSN-exclusive predecessor, NIS America’s dungeon-crawling puzzle title Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! 2: Time To Tighten Up Security is set to make a retail debut and it’ll include a special bonus for those that missed out on the original. An Amazon listing reveals that NIS has managed to squeeze all the quirky escapades of Badman’s first outing onto the 1.8GB UMD disc that houses Badman 2, effectively giving consumers two games for the price of one. Now that’s a generous deal.

Badman 2 is set to hit PSN as well, though it’s unclear if this same bonus will extend to the digital release. We are awaiting word from NIS on that, but as it stands, consider this a retail only incentive.

Homebrew developer Roe-ur-boat has released an update to AutoStart PRX, a custom firmware plugin that allows users to conveniently launch any application or game by binding it to a button combination of their choosing. The included configuration file supports to up 10 entries. Additionally, an optional configuration parameter enables users to specify a auto launch entry when no buttons are pressed.

Featuring an easier to use options menu and improved compatibility with applications that take advantage of exit callbacks such as iRShell, various usability focused bug fixes are included in this release. The complete changelog can be found after the break.

* Changed the hooking method, apps like iRshell’s exit game works correctly now.
* Fixed the bug where you couldn’t turn back on the screen if turned off.
* The constant LED blinking on startup shouldn’t happen anymore.
* Made the text in the options menu easier to understand.

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk is laying down the gauntlet, criticizing modern-day JRPGs for a lack of evolution. Speaking to Destructoid, he lamented that RPG developers in Japan are not moving forward, but instead are delivering the same product over and over again in a fresh coat of paint. In other words, Zeschuk feels the core mechanics are being neglected in favor of presentational aspects.

The fall of the JRPG in large part is due to a lack of evolution, a lack of progression. They kept delivering the same thing over and over. They make the dressing better, they look prettier, but it’s still the same experience.

An interesting view indeed. When you think about it, it’s hard not to agree. But the old adage of “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” also rings true here. Do JRPG gamers really want change? Not sticking with the fundamentals is a big risk for companies and as we’ve seen in the past, sometimes it does not pay off. By the same token, it can pay off. Most developers like to stay on the safe side for obvious reasons.

A recently published advertisement for a licensed LittleBigPlanet-themed PSP case from Accessories4Technology may have unintentionally confirmed existence of a PSP-4000. Specifically, the advert makes mention of compatibility with 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 series PSP models.

While Sony has yet to officially announce a fourth generation PSP separate from the go line, it’s no secret that such a product has been heavily rumored in the past. Talk of the supposed 4000 was reportedly one of the hot topics among Japanese game developers at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. This, coupled with the fact that Sony has a historically dubious track record of keeping premature information regarding new PSP iterations under the rug, makes it hard to us to simply put this down to being your typical print snafu.

All that being said, it certainly won’t be a surprise to us if more details to trickle out within the coming months, eventually leading up to an announcement and subsequent product unveiling. In the meantime, we’ve contacted Sony for comment.

According to SCEA hardware marketing director John Koller, PSPgo sales are still “over-forecast” from what the company thought they would be. While maintaining steady support in the retail sector, Sony plans to sharpen its focus towards digital distribution in 2010. Sony acknowledges the fact that some publishers have been slow to make the jump to digital — Square Enix anyone? — and is in the process of laying down the groundwork to encourage third-parties to release simultaneously on both distribution fronts.

So, there’s a few things that we’re looking at for the PSP Go, but the most critical thing is that we’re fighting to ensure that we get parity on launch dates. We’ve noticed that has been one area for PSP Go owners that they’ve asked about, since they want to be able to get their titles at the same time as the “physical goods” consumer, the PSP 3000 consumer. That’s one area that we’re going to continue to emphasize. We are making plans for it and have launched that strategy on the first-party side, but we’re going to emphasize that for third-party. It makes sense. I think that given the type and sheer amount of consumers that believe in digital distribution, we need to ensure that they get their games when they want them.

It boggles my mind that these logistics were not worked out beforehand to ensure there would be no delay in getting product out on PSN versus retail channels. A colossal oversight by Sony. Nevertheless, PSPgo owners must find it reassuring to hear that steps are being taken to rectify the issue. It’s an important stride towards making the digital consumer not feel like they’re being treated unfairly.

Sony says the ability to include optional sound tracks is open to all publishers. Even though inclusion is not mandatory, there’s a likely chance that we’ll see other studios take advantage of the feature and incorporate audio into comics in similar ways for added value.

Already open for business in Japan, the storefront is slated to launch on PSN later this month in U.S. and Europe with a target of over 500 offerings to begin with.

While Nintendo VP Cammie Dunaway recently suggested that Rockstar should pour more resources into marketing to perk up sales of DS effort Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, analyst Michael Pacher believes the root cause of the game’s relatively dismal retail performance lies elsewhere. Speaking to Industry Gamers in a recent column, Pachter voiced the opinion that Chinatown Wars missed its mark for a simple reason: the platform audience. Releasing an M rated title on a platform where a vast majority of its owners are below the age of 17 is a recipe for disaster, says Pachter:

I don’t think that Chinatown Wars failed because of poor marketing. I think that an M-rated game will have difficulty selling on the DS, since the majority of DS owners are under 17 and can’t buy it. Those who are over 17 typically have a 360 or PS3 (if they are interested in M-rated content), and have already had ample opportunity to buy GTA IV on their home consoles.

Makes perfect sense and we’re inclined to agree, but you have to remember that sales of the PSP port weren’t exactly chart-topping either. Perhaps the top-down gameplay style turned all but the most hardcore of fans off from picking it up after all.
