Custom Firmware 5.00 M33-6

by Mike Bendel on January 20, 2009 @ 9:17 am

Homebrew developer Dark_AleX today released the 5.00 M33-6 firmware update. This update attempts to the fix the low-speed Memory Stick issue that has been problematic for certain users since the release of 3.71 firmware.

The included file fat_comparison.html provides a chart comparing the speed of each MS driver and shows that read times increase significantly with the speed fix enabled. If you have already installed fatmsmod, be sure to disable it first before enabling the MS speed fix through recovery mode. Further details can be found over in the release thread.

maeirsvs says:

so lemme get this straight..if i have 5.00m33-4 does it mean that i cant or is it not recommended that i dont do this update if i have fatmsmod installed?

x3sphere says:

If you already have fatmsmod installed and want to use the speed fix option in recovery it is recommended to reinstall 5.00 M33 then apply the M33-6 update. If you aren't going to enable the speed fix option, just update to M33-6 as normal.

maeirsvs says:

so re-install 5.00m33 but without the fatmsmod then just update straight to m33-6?

jason0P says:

can someone tell me if I can upgrade to 5.00m33-6 when my psp phat is 3.71m33-3 please?

x3sphere says:

Of course.. since you're doing a full install though, you need the 500.PBP placed in the 5.00 M33-6 updater folder. That file can be found here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/154173870/500.PBP

Thanks Dark_Alex for the release! Just wondering if the 1.5 Add-on works for 5.00 M33-6?

manji17 says:

hey guys i got a question..i have cfw 4.01 m33-2 installed in my psp slim, can i update it straight to cfw 5.00 m33-6?

nathanmoon says:

@manji17: yes, first download the 5.00.PBP at [rapidshare.com] and then put the file in the UPDATE folder and then send it to ur psp and RUN IT.

once the update is done, u r in 5.00 M33-6.

duke_drift87 says:

I have a question too :D, I have installed 5.00 M33-6; is it necessary to create that translating recovery text? thanx

limesoft says:

I did place update folder -> psp/game/update ....

but when i run the update, it show " this game cannot be started . the data is corrupted."

i did official update using WiFi, my version is 5.00 now.... \

any idea?

jiro_ejlr says:

may i ask something.. i can’t install the 5.00 M33-6 into my PSP fat.. the file always says that “The game cannot be started, The data is corrupted.” Others said that check my recovery mode by holding the trigger R and power on the PSP.. but it doesn’t work for my PSP fat..

january39 says:

The update only works if you are currently using the M33 range of FW. It sounds like you have OFW.

Goto Settings>System information> Whats it say?

Btw wrong thread and section.

jiro_ejlr says:

System Software: 5.00

that's all!!..

wsensor says:

just a question... has anyone else had problems with the psp turning itself off?

so far its happened after I installed 5.00m33-6 ...

I did a downgrade then upgraded to the latest m33

only things different so far...

5.00m33-6

enabled the speed option... from the recovery config menu... even though I do not notice any difference with this or when I used fat mod...

I went and put 3 games onto my new 8gig microsd card that is in a converter...

but when I start playing valkerie profile leneth or star ocean snes remake after awhile it turned off the psp...

those are the only games I have tries so far...

I was not sure if it was just me or maybe its the speed option so I guess I will go check that... I just wanted to know if anyone else had the psp randomly turn off during a game...

...

only other thing I have on the psp is cwcheat... and it has always worked for me... if this keeps giving me trouble guess I will go back to 5.00 m33-3 or -4

EDIT:

well it does this for my regular sony magic gate memory card to... T_T

hmm oh well guess I gotta downgrade for now maybe I messed something up when upgrading...

maybe its just bad luck on my part... oh well I like to have different games to play without carrying my umd disks around guess I just have to use my umd disks for now till I downgrade...

if anyone else notices anything please tell me XD

so I went back to the m33-4 for now...

I am waiting to get a psp slim soon... just gotta make sure I get the right one lol... almost bought one that was too new

donchua says:

Just found out that 5.00M33-6 got formatting problem with Photofast adapter.

I tried combined 1 X 8GB & 1 X 4GB microsd with the Photofast adapter and it only

show up as 3777mb after formatted..

Tried on my 3 PSP with 5.00M33-6, all the same.

I down-graded 1 PSP to 5.00M33-4 and use it to format the combination & got 11GB

space after formatted.

Once formatted on the 5.00M33-4 PSP, it will be ok to put in a 5.00M33-6 PSP.

Anyone else got this problem?

january39 says:

Thats OFW, you need to switch to CFW before you can use the M33 Updater. Sorry.

jx233 says:

Try formatting it on an older firmware like 4.01 M33-2.

Go to 4.01 M33-2 using DC7 or Hellcat's Recovery Flasher

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download 5.00 M33-6 and download 500.PBP .

After that, follow these steps.

1.Unzip the 5.00 M33-6 file and put the EBOOT.PBP into X:/PSP/UPDATE (X is the root of the MemoryStick)

2. Put the 500.PBP also into X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE folder.

3. And start update from XMB.

Poizen15 says:

I have OFW 5.03 how do I get any of the custom firmwares?:confused1:

jx233 says:

Do you have a Pandora Battery and MagicStick? If you don't then there is no way you can get to custom firmware.

Poizen15 says:

No, but I think I've heard some people say that you can make them. Right?

jx233 says:

You can make the MagicStick with a PC. Use PSP Pandora Deluxe 3.1

You can make the battery by hard-modding them or soft-modding them with a Phat PSP or Slim PSP running Custom Firmware.

BTW, Poizen15, sorry for leaving, I had to get off the computer.

solarnoise says:

Tried out the new MS speed option and I am not seeing any improvement

In particular, I notice considerable lag with Star Ocean: First Departure when running it off my memory stick...I enabled the new speed option and it still lags every few seconds or so when running across the screen.

Anyone see any improvements with their MS speed?

DrucelleS says:

hi does anyone know how to put psp-pda on 5.00 m33-6 or just a notepad to read to?

jx233 says:

Try bookr 0.71 or PSP Write by ZX-81

DrucelleS says:

i did what you all said on this site and i followed everyone's advice on how to do that 5.00 m33-6 thing but when im updating it says "500.pbp...incorrect file" , so whats wrong with it?? can somebody here help me please...

jx233 says:

We need some details:

1. Do you have custom firmware?

2. Do you have a PSP Phat or Slim?

BTW, you might suffer from the case of bad updater PBPs, so find another 500.PBP here.

DrucelleS says:

phat psp and it says here system software 4.01 m33-2

DrucelleS says:

ok just give me some links of working updater please

jx233 says:

Download 500.PBP

Put it into the folder in X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE (X is the root of MemoryStick)

Then find EBOOT.PBP in the 500m33_6 .zip and put it into the folder of X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE

DrucelleS says:

link for 500.PBP PLEASE

is it 500.pbp or 500.PBP ???

solarnoise says:

Any comments on the new speed hack?

january39 says:

It does not matter as long as it is named 500.PBP

You can get it from here Dark Alex

solarnoise says:

Still no feedback on the speed hack? I thought this would be a huge talking point on here.

It's still not working for me, Star Ocean and Crisis Core are both still laggy.

I'd try the fatmsmod but I don't want to brick my system again.

wsensor says:

eh dunno I meed tp get a new used psp... but Im afraid to buy one from gamestop

treno says:

hello,

i have a question, i own a fat psp, with the 3.40 OE-A Firmware

i want to upgrade it to the new 5.00 M33-6

what exactly do I need to do and how?

jx233 says:

First you download Hellcat's Recovery Flasher v1.50. Install 5.00 M33-4 from there. Then you download 5.00 M33-6. After that install 5.00 M33-6.

bored says:

Okay, so I have 5.00m333-4.

I've put a fatms mod on my psp, ran it, then deleted the files. So it's installed now?

What do I have to do to get to 5.00m33-6?

x3sphere says:

Copy the UPDATE folder inside the 5.00 M33-6 archive to PSP/GAME then run from XMB as usual.

omen_666 says:

Hello, mine is PSP Slim with 3.90 m33-3. Can i directly update the firmware to 5.00 m33-6 ??

Thanx in advance

x3sphere says:

Yes. Follow the instructions in my previous post.

angelsniper45 says:

wow. slim psps use UPDATE folders, whereas sometimes on phats depending on firmware need hellcats recovery flasher. UPDATE folders can normally work on both tho. and they should without any problems.

Arvindrocks says:

Hi. I just updated my psp 1000 from ver 3.xx to 5.00 m33-6 and i cant add a 1.50 kernel. I followed all the steps and have the right files but still no joy. havent came across someone else with this problem

jx233 says:

Well, only one other user I know had the same bug.

First, make a Pandora Battery and MagicStick.

Then, downgrade back to 3.90 M33-3 using DC5.

Then, from 3.90 M33-3, update to 5.00 M33-2 (because 5.00 M33-1 has a kernel init bug). In 5.00 M33-2 install the 1.50 kernel. The update to 5.00 M33-6.

jaideep says:

jaideep says:

WHAT IS KERNEL?????? I NEED HELP.....

x3sphere says:

If you are on 5.00 M33-4, there are no extra steps, just copy the UPDATE folder over to GAME and run it.

Leecher says:

It seems that you are on OFW currently. I'm afraid you cannot upgrade directly to 5.00 M33-6 from 4.01 OFW. In order to install CFW you will need a pandora battery and magic memory stick.

elitepspfreak says:

Does this mean the 5.00M33-6 has a fatmsmod buit-in?

jx233 says:

Somewhat, but it is a prx / driver made specifically for 5.00 M33-6.

FATMSMOD is a Version 3.71 MemoryStick prx /driver that was patched to be running on 5.00 M33-4 and lower. But 5.00 M33-6 uses a faster, better, and corrected driver that Dark_Alex created himself.

laroya01 says:

i have a CFW 4.01 m33-2. how can i upgrade to CFW 5.00 m33-6?

january39 says:

Easy, drag and drop the 5.00m33 updater into MS0:PSP/GAME/UPDATE

Rename the 5.00 OFW eboot to 500.pbp and run the updater from XMB.

Or use the much easier and quicker network updater. That will obtain the eboot for you if required.

laroya01 says:

how to use the network updater? is there any chance that my psp will be fully bricked?

january39 says:

Not from the 30 or so times i have done it.

Make sure your PSP is fully charged, enter recovery and check in settings network updater is enabled (should be by default though).

Then just hit the update option on the XMB, which is on the settings column (or possibly the network column if you have a CTF theme installed)

I have never heard of bricks occuring if you follow the instructions correctly and exactly.

laroya01 says:

is 5.00 m33-6 better than 4.01 m33-2?

update successful! thanks for the help sir!

Please refrain from Double posting also. You have 3 back to back posts here.

You should the updates are released to stabilise the FW, when a bug is discovered, generally DA releases a update to counter it.

You should always use the latest update, irrespective of which M33 you are using. :)

Hey man! Im over 3 months anxious about what to do with my PSP. I got sick of it after a year of owning it. I want something to spice my PSP. I've read a couple of your articles and I must say, people like you are genious! Anyway, as I was saying, I wanted to customize and personalize my PSP but I'm not sure what to touch first. Im afraid I might break it (and I can't afford to buy a new one). I hope you could help me =[

I don't know what to give you but I've got:

PSP-2000

firmware - 5.00 m33-6

8GB memory stick

I just want to have an famicom emulator, sega emulator, gamboy advance emulator installed.

I also want to have CXMB themes.

I've been googling it and watching everything on youtube but everytime I do research, each one has different processes and procedures.

I dont even know what type of motherboard I have.

PLEASE HELP. ANYONE.

x3sphere says:

This guide is a great starting point if you are new to the world of homebrew. Also, check out this thread for emulators, there's plenty listed there.

As for installing them, the process for each is rather straightforward, just drag n' drop the folder that contains an "EBOOT.PBP" to the PSP/GAME folder located on your Memory Stick. Afterwards, the app(s) you transferred over should show as individual items when accessing the PSP's Game menu, each represented by a graphical icon.

Additionally, a step-by-step guide on installing CXMB can be found at this link. The process is a little more complex and may seem daunting for a newbie but this guide will walk you through it. Hope that helps! :) If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.
