Rumor: DSi Launching April 4 In North America

by Mike Bendel on January 13, 2009 @ 10:52 pm

Citing anonymous insiders, IGN is reporting that the DSi, the camera-touting successor to Nintendo’s immensely popular DS Lite handheld will hit North American shores on April 4. Retail partners speculate that the handheld will carry a price tag of $180. Comparatively, the DS Lite costs nearly $50 less and even the standalone PSP Core Pack carries slightly less of a price tag at $170.

Keep in mind that this all speculation, but in the likely event it is true, an official announcement can’t be too far off.

Most cellphones already have cameras. Aside from the camera feature why would I buy this over a DS lite? Is there more powerful hardware?

x3sphere says:

DSWare looks interesting. There's already some neat games on the service in Japan. Nintendo hasn't announced what they'll be offering over here yet though. I know for a fact the DSi has more RAM. The processor has supposedly been upgraded as well, but no one has done any definitive testing on that front yet.

Even with hardware improvements and DSWare (which who knows will take off or not), it's still hard to justify the $50 increase in price, especially when you consider it will cost more than a PSP. I was personally hoping they'd cut the price of the Lite and release DSi at $130.

Sardu says:

If it's got a more powerful processor and more ram... but plays the same games? What's the point?

It's not like game devs are going to make games that just work on the DSI. They are going to continue to make games that work on both DS and DSI.
