Square Enix Not Ready For Wii Virtual Console

We all have been wondering, when is Square-Enix going to bring some killer RPGs to the Wii’s Virtual Console service? After all, it wouldn’t take much effort on their part to bring over the original Final Fantasy for the kazillionth time. But the fabled RPG juggernaut says they are not ready.

According to an interview in Japanese gaming magazine Nintendo Dream, Square-Enix representative Shinji Hashimoto revealed that the company still believes the Japanese gaming market requires “physical media”, and as the FF series is played by a wide range of users, from children to adults, he says they would run into billing system limitations.

OK, but the Wii has point cards kids can buy at local stores to purchase VC games. So Hashimoto’s point on the billing system is moot. The real reason, as 1UP stated, is the fact that there is simply more green to be made by developing full-fledged remakes on the PSP and charging full price.
