Dark_AleX releases 3.40 OE-A and 3.30 OE-A2

by Mike Bendel on April 20, 2007 @ 1:36 pm

Only a few days after the big 3.30 OE-A release and PSP developer Dark_AleX is back with two more releases! First up is 3.40 OE-A which features increased popstation compatibility, integration with the new PS3 Firmware 1.7, and improvements in the core OE flasher to prevent accidental bricks.

Next up we have a small 3.30 OE-A2 update for those who don’t feel the need to upgrade to 3.40 yet. The package includes a small security patch and the reimplementation of the autoboot feature. For those wondering, this patch and the autoboot feature are already integrated into 3.40 OE-A.

Alex is also warning all users to backup their existing PSone game saves before running the 3.40 pops, as the firmware will force you to convert all your saves into the new format, thereby rendering them incompatible with past firmware releases.

TimTiger says:

Wow he has 3.40 OE already done in less then a week after reliese. Good Job DA

Tenshigami says:

Damn Sony for messing with the save format. That makes Popsloader not as useful...

dante says:

Hi,

DA , can you put the L/R function to video player like mp3 player on Custom Firmwares!!

than i can play the music video one by one and NEXT!

thank you !!!

Tenshigami says:

I don't even think Dark_AleX reads this forum. I don't even think he's POSTED on this forum.

And I'm pretty sure that, while he probably COULD do that, he wouldn't bother to make a modification so trivial. The purpose of the OE firmwares is to enable homebrew while having the same functionality as a later firmware. Any features beyond that are entirely optional.

x3sphere says:

he does :) but never has posted.. too busy hehe

chrix says:

I have the infamous TA-082 mobo, and I managed to downgrade and then upgrade to version 3.03OE-B. Could I upgrade to this version without problems or will it brick my beauty? Right now I can run homebrews, but I'm having trobule with a couple of backups I want to load from the memorystick, could these issues be solved applying this upgrade? and again, with my mobo...am I able to apply it?

Thanks in advancefor your valuable help.

Chris

XsavioR says:

Great work D_A, worked like a charm.

Yeah bud once you DG your done worrying about it.

Tenshigami says:

FYI, 3.30 custom topmenus will work in 3.40. Just use a homebrew app to flash it. For some reason when I mounted flash0:/ to USB and flashed the file myself, it did the ol' temp-brick. Both times. Then when someone suggested I use a homebrew to flash it, it worked immediately.

jondoe696911 says:

does 3.40 oe have the t-mobile hotspot access?

yanger says:

Kinda new to DAX's releases... if i upgrade to 3.40 OE, can i downgrade to 1.5 again someday? [or is it an emulation?]

x3sphere says:

yes

you can always downgrade back to 1.5 (there is no reason to though, 3.40 OE is not missing any feature 1.5 has)

yanger says:

Is there any detailed information on what DAX's OEs do? I've been using DevHook for sometime now, and switching over feels like swtiching from windows to linux :| hehe

iceman 47 says:

dark_ alx why why arent you making a 3.11 downgrader why:crying:

x3sphere says:

probably the most appealing feature is the PS1 emulator, and all your backups / UMDs can be ran straight from the opening screen instead of having to load up a external program like DevHook.

then there is other improvements like faster boot time and hiding corrupt icons.

hao0083 says:

congratulation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is magical!

yanger says:

MM.. wow! Looks so different to DevHook - really like the displaying of the games and homebrews right inline instead of a text display.

x3sphere says:

glad you like it!

TimTiger says:

GIVE IT TIME!! Downgraders are alot harder to make then OE firmware.

ada_gool says:

I'll Try Resi 3 in a sec... I Don't Messing with the XMB so I'm Not Guna Try Top Menu!

 I'm Not scared

I Also think (not tht this is Dark Alexs Fault) That there needs to be More Controller Options For PS1 Emulator, MOH Is Near impossible To play

:glare: Not that I'm Complaining!

Darkchild says:

NO NEED TO BE RUDE!

Anyways, to upgrade to that version, check the howtos in the forum =D

For example...HERE : http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=383

MemphiS says:

well done and soooo fast! good work dax! you're teh man!

THANKS very much。。。

Finbaloid says:

DAX Is true Genius, Anyone Who is on 1.50 and using Devhook Needs to upgrade to Open Edition.

Who Else here Agrees with me that Custom Firmware Opens Up your psp so much more, homebrew and the ps1 games!?!?!

I Really don't think i could go back to original Sony Firmware, It's just a bit shite Really!

Anyone Testing Topmenus?

There is Always A chance they mite work..... Nahhhhh, But I Could Be Wrong I hope.

I Tried Downgrading From 3.10 to 3.03 OE-A and the PS1 Emulator wasnt great and thts the main thing I use my Psp for so i Reupgraded.

Oh and Anyone Know of anyway of Using Edison Carters Cheat Device With It, Without DevHook. I can with an older version of DevHook But That is a bit of a kerfuffle!

ada_gool says:

any instructions on how to downgrade custom firmware back to 1.50 again to see if the error dissapears ?

aqd84 says:

Hi! Im new to this forum and want to say hi to all! Well I DL the 3.40 oe-a and I have a PSP V3.40... I was wondering how I Would install the OE-A version onto my psp.. If anyone could please help me out, it would be much appriciated.. THANKS!!!!

x3sphere says:

check Custom Firmware User Guides in the help forum.

you can't.

ada_gool says:

hi went there and followed the guide done the recovery bit the screen went black for a bit then got back to system info and im still on 3.40 OE-A what do i do? it ok worked it out i changed the recovery folder to the game folder not the game150 folder thanks anyways :)

ada_gool says:

:mad1: no fair still didnt work

any advice ppl would b appreciated

x3sphere says:

need more info. any error? what happened exactly when you tried to run it

akulmie says:

Hi m kinda new to this and my current psp firmware is 3.4 SE

I know i kinda fucked up but i learned about these OE and i cant seem to figure out how to retreive the DATA.DXAR for the installation, what program do i execute? and how do i retrieve it?

x3sphere says:

the guide here explains everything

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=383

but 3.4 SE? No such firmware exists.. do you mean 2.71 SE?

akulmie says:

No, isnt the latest System Software 3.40? Im not exactly sure but i think i might have the abreveations wrong. SE stands for Sony edition im assuming and OE stands for Open edition. if thats the case then i now have 3.40 SE

x3sphere says:

oh ok. well sorry to say but you are out of luck for now. 3.4 cannot run any homebrew, so that means no downgrading. OE can only be installed from 1.5 or any previous custom firmware editions.

RomTheStampede says:

Resident Evil 3 does work perfectly, I beat the game already... but like i said RE2 freezes at the RPD station :bored:

lalomorales says:

what does increased popstation compatibility mean? If i got a few playstation games that I put into iso format, can i just drag the file straight onto the memory stick? what folder?

also... im trying to load grand theft auto vice city stories cso and it loads up for about a minute.. then says error reading the grand theft auto vice city stories umd . . . . i tried changing the recovery to use no umd, then it didnt load at all.. i tried loading it with a umd in the drive and it loads up and gives me the error.

any advice??

x3sphere says:

corrupt iso probably. Increased popstation compatibility means it has support for more PSone games.

iso is correct format for PSone games but you need to convert them to a PSP specific format. Here is a guide for doing so:

scaveman says:

Hi i just upgraded my psp to 3.40 OE-A

All is working fine

i reformated my memory card after upgrade but a cant see a recovery folder

when i press R on start up nothing happens psp starts normal

Can anyone tell me how RECOVERY works Please???

Jaynb says:

You need to switch off your PSP, then when you switch it on, keep the 'R' button HELD down until the recovery menu starts.

scaveman says:

Thanks for that got it working

So if say i wanted to return back to sonys 1.5 firmware for some unknown reason

do i just put the official eboot in the psp/game/recovery/eboot.pbp ???

x3sphere says:

Yes just follow this guide

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=1508

Jaynb says:

Almost.

You need to use the recovery folder from this link and place it into GAME, then rename the 1.5 file to "UPDATE.PBP" and place this into the recovery folder.

Once all that is done start up recovery mode and choose the option that says "Run program at.."

Recovery Folder

Jaynb says:

Sorry x3sphere. posted same time!

scaveman says:

Hi

Can someone please tell me if its safe to upgrade to 3.40 oe-a

with a Ta-082 motherboard

Yes it is perfectly safe

3.40 oe in this short period of time, but i still can't use non of them;( i have normal 3.30 and i think there is no hope for me to change to any OE:(:(:( if someone can help me, please contact me....

nyatch says:

although I dun know anything how dark alex crack sony official firmware, but I really appreciate wat he has done to us, enable HOMEBREW.....hope in the future can learn much from there oso.....

younger107 says:

you have to format your psp's f1 folder.

There is probability about something wrong with 3.40OEA when you upgrade you system.

The problem of f1 will directly affect the function of RECOVERY MODE.

Several people have reported that when they finish the upgrading, they can not entry RECOVERY MODE due to some unreasonable phenomenon.

Junit says:

i like my 3.40oe-a good job alex.

dma52691 says:

 if Dark Alex reads this it would be nice when you make a downgrader for 3.30 so i can upgrade to Custom Firmware. I would really appreciate it:biggrin:

Blaq says:

What people dont seem to understand is that he cant just write a downgrader, sony doesn't want you to downgrade and the only way to do it is to hack into the system.

He would have a downgrader out in a few days I'm sure if it was a matter of writing it only what he is doing is like tryn to make a toaster microwave things. Sony wrote the firmware to keep you from downgrading so the downgrader has to break thru their programing like when you had to use the GTA xploit. Find him the xploit and I'm sure he'll set you up fast.

Did I make any sence at all?

drmaniam says:

New to the forum ... this is a dumb question. Can the firmware 3.40 OE -A play UMD movies from different region. My psp is region 3 or something but I got a UMD movie for region 1. I can play it. Is there a software or something that will let my region 3 psp play a region 1 umd.

I tried some of the option under the recovery menu and I does not help also. Much appreciated if some one can help out on this matter.

Thanks in advance.

r4yoflight says:

Looks like DA has been ignoring the fact that makes his custom firmwares no 1 for psp... its the famous "no umd mode" plus no need into some loader, the no umd mode hasnt gotten any better since 3.XX OE or even worse compared to 2.71 se-c, im hoping to see some action for this no umd mode.. soon maybe,or maybe never at all..

x3sphere says:

no, the region setting option does not affect UMD movies.

you can try UMD Emulator, grab it from this thread:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=911

however it has a low compatibility rate so your movie may not work, but it's worth a try.

blackwing says:

I encountered a problem on 3.30 and 3.40 OE's Popstation. If you're playing Final Fantasy 7, and if you encounter a Gagighandi (the dragon like creature) or Touch Me (frog like creature), and they perform certain types of attacks on your characters, the screen becomes garbled and the system becomes unplayable. You need to restart FF7.

scott.inan says:

I have ta-082 with official 3.30 rom. i know dark_alex has the ta-082 downgrader but I need FW 2.71 how can I get to that? also he says I need "HEN" what is that? sorry I'm new to this and i'm getting too much conflicting information from different websites. thx:confused1:

Tenshigami says:

Ah, a POPS issue, eh?

Do you know whether previous versions of pops have this problem?

popsloader is a plugin that will let you load a different version of pops on your current OE firmware. While Dark_AleX has stated that popsloader does not work on 3.30 OE-A or 3.40 OE-A, I have had no problems with popsloader in either firmware.

also, you may want to check out this thread:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=889

People who read that thread would be more likely to know how to solve your problem. The thread's entire purpose is to determine what PS1 games are compatible, and if they aren't, where the emulator messes up. Of equal importance is any information someone can give to provide a fix for any issues.

drmaniam says:

thanks I will try it tonight. hopefully it works.

blackwing says:

I don't know, but it seems to work fine with 3.10 OE-A'

OK, will try to ask them there.

you have to put the data.dxar you created in oeupdmaker and put it in 303oeflasher

I've just bought a Japanese Ceramic White PSP [Value Pack version] which came with 2.01 firmware until my European "Passport to London" UMD forced me to upgrade to the European 2.71 firmware so I could run it.

In any case, I'm looking to upgrade to the latest Dark-AleX version as I was recommended to upgrade to it because of the speed boost for certain games like Ys:The Ark of Napishtim amongst others and I was wondering if there were any easy-to-understand guides on how to upgrade to Dark-AleX's firmware from the official Japanese firmware when I do upgrade to it...

first you will need to downgrade your 2.71 to 1.5, and then follow the guide to install 3.40 OE-A.

both guides can be found here:

http://forums.exophase.com/forumdisplay.php?f=45

dennis96411: then it most likely a problem with your memory stick. first try formatting this one, and if that doesn't fix it try another memory stick.

MenaceInc says:

...if thats the official Sony firmware then you're buggered.....you can't get OE firmware on your psp past 3.10 firmware.

Finbaloid says:

Now I've updated an official update from PSP site. My system ver. is now 3.40. Is there any difference between Alexe's version and official version ? Finbaloid says:

All You Can Do now is not upgrade and wait, very, very patiently!!:glare: yeh... Sorrry! We Don't Even Know is going to be a downgrader!!! But there seems to be always a way for DAX!

Hold Out On The Upgrading On Offical F/W Tho, I would advise tht to every1!

By the Way The Countdown to "a 3.10-3.11 Downgrader" is a fake, Dark_Alex has nothing to do with it, even tho it says "copyright Dark_Alex" In the corner!

Anyone else seen tht?

He Must Get Really Pissed Off with People Using his name so much, poor guy!

Ok, I just bought a PSP so Im still learning about it.

I just installed 3.40 this morning, and now I've come across this stuff now, about this "edited" firmware.

What would I need to do to install this? I heard something about needing 1.50 or something, but I have v3.40, are these two versions for two diff things?

Basically, I just have v3.40 SONY patch now, what downloads do I need to get the 3.40 OE-A firmware to work? thx :)

Krelian says:

Unfortunately you didn't do yourself any favors by upgrading to Sony firmware 3.40...

So far only Sony firmware 3.03 and LOWER can be downgraded to Sony firmware 1.50.

You MUST be on Sony firmware 1.50 in order to load Open Edition firmware.

Your options are:

1. Return your PSP for another which hopefully has Sony firmware 3.03 or LOWER.

2. Buy and install a modchip.

3. Stay and wait at 3.40 and DO NOT upgrade further, sooner or later someone may find a way to downgrade 3.10 and higher down to 1.50.

Hello I'm new in all of this homebrew stuff. I have the original 3.40 version for psp (because I didn't know homebrew existed when I updated, now I want to shoot at myself!!!) but anyway. I wanted to know if I can change my 3.40 version to Dark Alex 3.40 OE version. Which firmware do I need to be able to change to 3.40 OE??? And another thing... With 3.40 OE I can install homebrew just as previous firmwares like 2.70? Which is the best Firmware for installing homebrew? 1.50? Can I do something to downgrade my version? I'm sorry for all the questions, but I really don't know much about this. I was hoping someone could explain to me. Thanks in advance to everyone who read this.

x3sphere says:

that's correct, the location free player was removed to save space on the flash.

sagittarius_mel: no you cannot downgrade, and probably not anytime soon. and yeah 3.40 OE gives you all the benefits of previous firmware versions.

dennis96411 says:

Can you give me a software that could run on psp official firmware?

There is absolutely no homebrew that can work on official firmware

There is no homebrew that can run on Sony firmware 3.10 and higher...

The only software you can really get are demos from Sony and such.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and new to PSP stuffs. I bought a 2.60 firmware PSP from my friend, updated to 2.80, downgraded to 1.5, and now it's up to 3.40 OE-A. I've tried several games, and it seems only a few of them work. I've read around that some games need a UMD game inside of the PSP in order to function, with "Use NO-UMD" set to "Disabled." Would this solve my problems? One game that doesn't work is Burnout Dominator. I've tried every combination of settings in the Recovery Mode screen. Should I get a UMD game and try it with that?

Thanks a lot.

protomind says:

Every time I follow the instruction exactly, when I go to update in the game150 folder the damn thing just shuts off. Simple as that. it is below in step 3 I have problems. The problem is that it flat out turns off. Starts right back up again, but does not update or create this 'data.dxar', at least not anywhere I can find. Any ideas?

Also worth noting is that when I try step three and click on '3.40 OE-A", the file below it is listed as being 'corrupted data'

and it is strangly 35 megs in size, but if I look in the PSP through windows the only files in the folder (game150 folder) are the 150.pbp and 340pbp, and they are about 35 megs in size total.

Zetanor says:

I'm on 3.03 OE-C and I can't seem to be able to run it. In fact, I can't run anything besides Playstation One(1) games. Help? Thanks.

x3sphere says:

that's normal, because the corrupt data is the non-% folder and contains the two PBP files.

If the DXAR is not being created it's definitely a problem with your memory stick.. have you tried formatting it?

protomind says:

Hmmmm, so I am the dummy here tonight. I was/am/are so tired that I did not change eboot.pbp to 340.pbp, I think the fact that the 1.50 was already named properly threw me off =), past step three and now moving to next ones =)

Thanks to all who have worked on these awesome mods BTW.

UPDATE, it installed just fine. Another question/s though......

Do I have to worry about accidental/auto firmware updates when connecting to the internet? If so, is there a setting I need to change? I basically do not want some unwanted sony firmware update.

x3sphere says:

no, installing the Sony FW is impossible via normal means with OE. even if you try to run network update, nothing will happen. You'd have to manually start the update through recovery mode.

hoon2999 says:

how comes language setting of korean doesnt work.

could be a cause of virginia tech shooting? *gasp*

x3sphere says:

no, it's disabled because the 1.5 kernel doesn't understand the Korean font set (OE is a mix of 3.x and 1.5 kernel).

dennis96411 says:

Do they have other custom firmware that could play homebrew and could run on any sony psp version?

Maybe somebody could make a homebrew enabler for any sony psp version.:glare:

I just really wanted to run some homebrew on my psp.

Roe says:

I'm getting annoyed with you stop asking, there is no way for you to use homebrew go HERE

subr says:

Hi, this works great! Thanks a lot.

The only problem I have after installing 3.40 OE-A is that my Wifi stopped working. Is there any setting I need to change in order to make it work? It detects all the networks if you do a scan but it won't connect.

Thanks a lot

x3sphere says:

have you tried Restore default settings?

Dustin says:

I feel really dumb saying this, and I think the answer is obvious, but

Open Edition runs homebrew (psp isos? & other apps?), right?

tell me if I'm wrong in my thought of what "homebrew" means or if Open Edition does not run it.

Also. Can I just install 3.40 OE, or do I need to install 3.01 OE, 3.03 OE, 3.10 OE, and 3.30 OE first?

Thanks! :)

x3sphere says:

yeah that is correct, OE runs all homebrew. 3.40 OE is a full install, so you do not need to install any previous OE revisions.

subr says:

I just tried that, no luck.

hoon2999 says:

well is there any way to get work with korean language setting?

cuz of my sister using psp but she cant speak english that much

x3sphere says:

Not that I know of.. as I said, the 1.5 kernel doesn't support the Korean font set so if you went ahead and directly replaced the font file on the flash it would probably cause a semi-brick.

subr: then I don't think it's a issue on the PSP side.. have you changed any router settings since upgrading to 3.40 OE? Try rebooting the router.

Krelian says:

I don't know about you but I spend FAR more time in games than in XMB... I don't know any language other than English but I'm sure I could still make my way to whatever game I wanted if I had no alternative.

Ichigo04291982 says:

Tekken: Dark Resurrection doesn't work on 3.40 OE-A

Great. That fix my problem. Thank you!

subr says:

I have even tried other networks near by. It detects the networks when it scans but it won't connect. I'll keep trying, maybe there's something wrong with the wifi... I haven't use it for a while.

EDIT: Fixed it, I was filtering by MAC address on my router and the MAC I get on system information doesn't match my wifi's MAC address. Now it's working 100% thanks.

weepingboil says:

...is there any anywhere?

(I'm looking for a setting to stop the UMD from autoloading at startup)

Roe says:

Just disable it from the settings menu on your psp or enable the skip sce logo in configuration in recovery mode

Dustin says:

Ok, so my PSP finally came in the mail today. I opened the package, prepared to install 3.40 OE within the hour. I turn it on, go to system information, and I have Official 3.11 firmware! Yay!! ^_^

Ok- just by pure estimation, does anyone think that a downgrader may come out anytime soon?

Thanks!

TimTiger says:

You sir are hosed. From what I can tell there is no clue yet when a downgrader will show it's face. It will probably be a few more months before there is even a hint of a downgrader. Sorry

Finbaloid says:

seems everyone wants a downgrader! I know its harsh but in the future don't upgrade! To Be Honest there is really not much point in doing it, unless you are silly! I still feel sorry for you offical sony users :crying: poor men! ( and women) People Plz Dont ask for downgraders though, its bloody annoying. Then Again, I think we should help people out a little here!

The Best thing sony could do would be to actaully put Resident Evil 2 in a "working" Box for the Psp! Excuse me sony, ITS A CLASSIC!

And i Really cant see a diffrence in 3.30 and 3.40! "Updated POPs compatibility"...Umm Yeah And that is?!?!

Also Dose Anyone else have problems With Tomb Raider 1? No sound and it dusnt load up to a leval on mine :crying:

Another Classic, But with the new game coming out, i suppose there is not much point!

 i just had a right old Rant, i am sorry!

Chilly Willy says:

TR1 has always worked fine... with CDDA. You need to convert the disk with the latest popstation apps and make sure to use a raw dump with the TOC... not an ISO. ISOs don't have the CDDA tracks needed. I've been playing TR1 since 3.03 OE just peachy. 8)

KlouxOne says:

i also have 3.40 OE-A and i play games from my memorystick but some game play sometime a bit slow, for exsample valkijre legend, some guys say that 3.03 works better dan 3.40 is this true? and how can i fix my problem?

DeyDest says:

I will not ask the dumbest most asked question on this thread, but I will ask a dumb question. That being said, I have a TA-082, 3.4 Sony Firmware. Just caught on to all this Homebrew stuff, and was wondering if anyone knows if 3.4 is hackable, or if I should try and find another PSP that I can downgrade?

Thanks in advance.

x3sphere says:

nope, 3.40 cannot run homebrew. Best bet would be to get a PSP with 2.71 firmware so you can downgrade it straight to 1.5.

DeyDest says:

Thanks X3 appreciate the inf0... I will try and scam a lower version from someone =)

RomTheStampede says:

I started off with an 2.71 TA-082 PSP, then DG to 1.50, then upgrade it to 3.40 and set the RECOVERY configurations, then after, i go back to the Config Menu but, it gives me a blank sky Blue screen. And from there it locks up, and i have to reboot it, I don't know what the problem is but my Configuration Recovery Options isn't coming up, can someone help???????:confused1:

Jaynb says:

Have a look at this thread here.

Someone else had a similar problem.

jelliclejeff says:

If my edition is 3.11, can I update to 3.40 OE-A?

Jaynb says:

No, not at the moment. There is no downgrader for firmware 3.11

Have a look here:- http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=1121

No problem, glad I could help!

jelliclejeff says:

OH! thank you, Jaynb, you saved a new PSP!!!

In Taiwan, we have a really risky way to downgrade PSP, and this way is much more experuence cause we have to OPEN PSP........and ruin the assurance label.......this means I can't play iso games with software adjustment.......

Fred Smith says:

Well my brother finally broke down and bought a PSP. I have had mine since I bought it as a FW1.5. I haven't had to worry about the type of motherboard I have while downgrading but now I do. He wants to use homebrew and I have identified his as a brand new 2.6 (I on the box) and a newer motherboard (IC1003). I believe it's a TA-082. Now the question I need clarification on is can I downgrade him right from 2.6 to 1.5 or do I need to upgrade him to 2.71 then to 1.5 using the 2.71 for TA-082/086 downgrader pack? Thanks.

TimTiger says:

The easiest way to downgrade is to yes Upgrade to sony firmware 2.71 then use this guide.

All i have is the game cannot be started data is corrupted ! And i know it's impossible because it works fine on my sandisk 1gb. Help me please i'm desperate !!!

  :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:

TimTiger says:

Sounds interesting, did you check if your MS is a fake?

Krelian says:

So all of the CSOs or EBOOTs work fine on your 1GB but not on your 4GB?

Well the first thing I would do is format your 4GB then test it again.

If it still doesn't work on the 4GB then in your PSP XMB menu move over to Video and press TRIANGLE and go into Information... If it says MagicGate Unknown you've probably got a bad/fake memory stick.

i have 3.40 psp

but i cant play games on my memeory card

what can i do for that

plz help me :blushing:

Krelian says:

Is that 3.40 firmware from Sony or Dark-Alex?

The special features we talk about here require Open Edition firmware.

To get OE firmware on your PSP you must first downgrade to Sony version 1.50.

Currently if you have Sony firmware 3.10 or higher THERE IS NO DOWNGRADER.

Your only options are:

Right now that's all there is to it... when there IS a downgrader EVERYONE will know.

You can read the PSP 3.10+ Firmware Problems thread if you have any further questions.

redkan says:

i have psp 3.40 oe

and i wanna make it to 3.40oe-a

how can i do it

can you make a photo slideshow for it

Krelian says:

If you have firmware 3.40OE you already have 3.40OE-A, so far it's only had one revision.

DarrinDaniels says:

Hi all ... first attempt at firmware modding here and having some problems.

Currently own an original PSP fw version 1.50 (checked system settings) this system has NEVER had any kind of mods or anything done to it. Never even had a UMD game played on it (I purchased it and 7 games a few years back and left it sitting in the box .. :blushing: ..... so I know it's never been touched ... surprisingly the battery holds a charge!!!)

Here's what I've done:

Gone through the tutorials on how to upgrade the firmware

Downloaded Dark Alex's packages for 3.40OE ......

Downloaded the 1.50 and 3.40 PBP as instructed (even tried a google search to be sure i had a few different copies of the file to make sure it wasn't one particular file that was causing a problem)

Followed the directions to the letter ... even formatted the memory card (4GB) before the entire process to be sure it was clean

copied the files to the game folder since it's 1.50

when i launch the mem stick it says 3.40 oe update maker .... so i click it and off it goes

first it opens and checks 150.pbp then

extract and packs 150 firmware subset

then opens and checks 340.pbp then

extract and packs 340.pbp firmware

stays for quite some time and at the end it says: doing static sha 1 verification

in red letters it says:

Error: invalid sha1. try again

auto reboot in 10 seconds

Now at first i assumed memory card issues so i tried 4 different cards of different sizes: 256,512,1GB,4GB

and none of them work .. all go through the same error sequence.

I've tried different memory cards and different files.

I even downloaded a complete package from :

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=psp&thread.id=2941316&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

which includes all files needed to be sure that it wasn't the files i was using.

Also tried upgrading instead to fw 3.30 just to see if that helped ... same result ... fails on the SHA1 check

Although the DXAR file is created (approx 18 MB in size) I am not confident that it is a good file due to the failure of the sha1 check.

This dxar file is created every time i run any of the filemakers .... that's why i immediately assumed it was a bad memory stick ... but 4 memory sticks all different sizes and all different brands ???? (sony, lexar off the top of my head) ... i have a hard time believing they are all faulty.

Think this may go back into the box and sit on the shelf for another 5 or so years LOL

Any ideas ?

TIA

Snake says:

But is really? They search a exploit on 3.30 3.40 psp?Dark alex his listen this new?

Krelian says:

Since you did test different memory stick I'm pretty sure it's not that...

Since it happened when trying to go to 3.30OE and 3.40OE, that suggests it's your 150.PBP (which is used in both updates).

Redownload the OE installer package here.

Redownload the EBOOT to be named 150.PBP here.

Redownload the EBOOT to be named 340.PBP here.

I just installed 3.40OE-A on a PSP four days ago using those exact files... if you're still having issues then there may be something very odd going on.

Fred Smith says:

Here's a bit more info you can use to test your eboots to see if they are ok. I created MD5 checksums for the 1.5 and 3.4 firmwares.

1.5 eboot MD5:

e32eb27980ba8b291eb803e3397e4b24

3.40 eboot MD5:

58101e3f6e897725ac55ec1ae3dc07a0

I have used the 1.5 eboot I used to create this MD5 and I trust it is unmodified. The 3.4 eboot was from the official sony website download. I used a freeware program called MD5 Checksum Checker to create the MD5's.

x3sphere says:

It could be that the 150.PBP and 340.PBP files are getting corrupted during transfer.

Reasons for this may be:

1. bad USB cable

2. bad RAM / corrupt hard drive

as Fred Smith suggested, try checking the MD5 of both eboots on the memory stick.

dennis96411 says:

What's a mod chip?Don't call me a stupid cause i'm from China:wink:

DarrinDaniels says:

Thanks for all your suggestions

I was starting to think the suggestion about file corruption during transfer may be my best place to start after i downloaded the files linked above which have been proven to work .. unfortunately in my case they also failed.

So i just went out and purchased another Lexar 512 MB card as I have heard they are a reliable make.

I also ran the MD5 hash checker utility i found on another site that allows you to right click the file and check MD5 and SHA1

indeed the values of the files are the same after i transfer them to my PSP ... so now i have eliminated the cable and possibly computer memory (per se - since i ran the copy function over 5 times ... i reformatted the card in between each trial to be sure the MD5 matched up every single time and it did ... kind of a good sign i guess)

In the end i still get the SHA1 verfication failure eventhough the dxar file gets created and it is 18.6 MB in file size ..... i dont trust it.

The issue here is that eventhough i could theoretically try using it ... that ould prove to be the one main thing that could brick my psp correct ?

p.s. although the md5 comparison would suggest that the cable is good i should also mention the cord was still sealed brand new in the packaging where i purchased it from ... and i'm not sure if it makes a difference but the cable i purchased says specifically that it was made to go from PC to PSP and is not just some generic mini usb cable.

i'm not ready to give up yet ... and to be honest at this point considering how cheap PSPs are i might have considered trying the corrupt dxar file just to see what happens .... however common sense is telling me it's a surefire way to brick it .... and i'm quite determined to find out why it's failing.

I might take your suggestions further and try another PC just to make sure i have my bases covered ... after all I am using a Dell XPS 700 lol

nothing for now, dark alex!help this guy

Snake says:

But dark alex work on downgrader to 3.30/3.40?

x3sphere says:

hehe that is Sony's job not D_A's :P Plus I think there is a reason they used Flash Player 6.. the newest Flash Player has higher sys requirements.

Also if you don't know what a modchip is I recommend getting one professionally installed. it is a chip that is installed inside the chip to allow recovery of firmware, downgrading, etc..

redkan: place your games in the ISO folder

Fred Smith says:

I got a question. Does anyone know if the MagicGate support info was present on firmware 2.6. My brother bought a 4 gig Lexar memory stick duo and was going to use it to downgrade his 2.6 PSP. Before he started, I suggested to make sure it had MagicGate support but the thrid line on info for the memory stick is missing. My 3.03C has the line and I directed him right to it, but is wasn't there. I thought I read somewhere that if the card did not have MagicGate support it would say unsupported rathre than not list it. By the way, he bought the card retail, it came with the full size memory stick adapter and it has the MagicGate symbol on it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

x3sphere says:

No, it is not present on Firmware 2.6. I believe they added it in 2.71.

Fred Smith says:

Thank you very much for the fast reply.

therulerfall says:

Hey does this mean that a 3.1 downgrader exists?

B/c i havent updated in forever hopein that a downgrader comes out

jsut wondering if i should just upgrade all the way? or is there still a chance of a 3.1 downgrader available?

any help would be appreciated

indianneel2@gmail.com

Krelian says:

No, it means there isn't a 3.1 downgrader... that's why it says you need 3.03 or less.

If you're going to wait it's best to wait at 3.10 rather the to upgrade any farther.

Is there some feature in the official 3.11, 3.30, or 3.40 you need?

StriderSkorpion says:

Actually, it's not present in that version either. Even though I bought my memory stick at the store, I wanted to see what the PSP (came with 2.71 stock) said. When I checked, it only listed User Capacity and/or Free Space.

dennis96411 says:

Thanks! So where i can get one of this"modchip"you called?

You're the best!!

You can get the modchip HERE

Piti says:

Piti says:

Thanks works very fine :)

Snake says:

But the downgrade for 3.30 exit or no?

Cheezeball99 says:

Uh, there's no Downgrader for 3.30, dude...

Snake says:

Yes I say,but not exit?

Cheezeball99 says:

Uh, I know this is a language/translation barrier, but I honestly have no idea what you're asking... But I'll give it a shot.

I THINK you are asking if DaX and N00bz and them are still working on a downgrader for 3.30, and I can only imagine they are still working on it, because alot of people want it, I'm sure. Although I don't want to speak on their behalf or anything...

Snake says:

Ok,thanks alot

Brutus_X says:

Wow, amazingly helpful first post and incredibly long thread!

I was wondering if you, who obviously has been part of the scene for some time, could fill me in on the differences between the firmwares? I'm running DA's 2.71SE-C, which seems to work very well. Is there a reason I should install the 3.30OE or 3.40OE instead? Are there benefits or disadvantages? F.i. would I be able to run ISOs that doesn't work under my current FW?

Also, I'm an experienced software developer and I was thinking of contributing to porting MAME to the PSP, anyone who knows if there's already and efforts going on toward this?

Krelian says:

Probably the most common reason anyone is on 3.xxOE firmware is to be able to convert PSone games for use on PSP, other than that there will be some increased game compatibility (especially for the new ones coming out this year).

As far as a MAME emulator goes there were a few primitive ones (MAME4ALL, PSPMAME, Xmame) being worked on long ago but they've all fallen off the radar...

Brutus_X says:

Ok, so basically, there is nothing to lose from moving to 3.xxOE, while gaining compatibility? But it also seems like few people recommends the 3.40OE yet... What FW would you recommend atm?

As for MAME, no efforts underway as of now, hm? That would mean trying to port the entire project from scratch... Ouch! Oh well, it can be done, though if starting out alone I think I'll start by learning to program the PSP first; it will hopefully allow me to avoid a number of pitfalls...

Krelian says:

Most people are either on 3.03OE-C because they're stubborn, lazy, or seem to think that being able to customize your XMB is somehow important while most everybody else is on 3.40OE-A because it's the newest (and the XMB is still mostly customizable if you're into that).

I'd recommend 3.40OE-A but if you want you can go down to any other OE firmware later if you feel the urge.

Brutus_X says:

Because the PSP fora are so replete with worrying threads, some paranoia seemed only warranted, but from here and other places too I've been told that I lose nothing and gain capabilities and compatibility by switching from 2.71 SE-C --> 3.40 OE-A.

Big thanks!
