This isn’t quite gaming-related, but considering the amount of complaints there have been regarding piracy on the PC platform as of late, it is newsworthy. President Bush today signed a new anti-piracy law heavily backed by the RIAA and MPAA that establishes an IP Czar who will report directly to the president. Primarily aimed at better protecting worldwide copyrights, the law “toughens criminal laws against piracy and counterfeiting.”

“By becoming law, the PRO-IP Act sends the message to IP criminals everywhere that the U.S. will go the extra mile to protect American innovation,” said Tom Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

It will be interesting to see how effective this bill is at stopping your average file swapper. The first IP Czar is expected to be named near the end of or after Bush’s final term.
