PSP Custom Firmware 4.01 M33-2 Released Alongside 1.5 Kernel Add-on

by Mike Bendel on June 29, 2008 @ 12:18 pm

Developer Dark_AleX has issued an update to yesterday’s release of PSP custom firmware 4.01 M33, fixing a couple minor bugs regarding the built-in NID resolver and recovery mode. The complete changelog for 4.01 M33-2 can be found below.

* NID resolver: Fixed scePowerGetCpuClockFrequency issue. This is the same bug that happened in 3.80 M33-1, it won’t happen again ??

* Fixes recovery problems that have appeared in prior version (incorrect position of back string in language others than English, enable, and disabled strings not translated in plugins, hide pic0+pic1 couldn’t be changed, language file in flash1 wasn’t working..

* Spanish recovery translation typos fixed.

Additionally, as promised, the 1.5 kernel add-on for regular (fat) PSP units running 4.01 M33 series firmware has been released. Installing this is optional, but it will give you full compatibility with older homebrew titles that were written specifically for firmware 1.5. Installation instructions can be found at this link, courtesy of forum moderator Acerthief.

lol, I was about to PM one of the mods about this (since x3 is offline)

don't forget about the 1.50 kernel addon

PS: Say to Alek that the link to 1.50 kernel addon is incorrect, it's linking to the Time machine thread o.0

Acerthief says:

Oh okay.

I have no way to contact Alek actually XD.

I'l leave that to x3

MSA says:

Please repair translate recovery. When i translate it in Russian, i can't see Russian letters in recovery menu.:crying:

That's my translation file: http://rapidshare.com/files/125909030/ru_recovery.txt.html

Jack says:

ch1 -> chinese simplified

not Support

Why?

AND ISO/CSO name is use the chinese simplified the game can not start!

J.dizzlle says:

I'm a little new to this. But I have CFW 3.90 M33-3. I've never ran an update like this so i'm not fully sure what i'm doing. When I download the update from send space it opens with winRAR. Then I see 3 folders and a readme. The folders I see are SDK translate UPDATE, then the read me. I plugged my psp in and enabled USB, then I dragged and dropped UPDATE to F:\PSP\GAME Then the instructions tell me to drag and drop 4.01 M33-2.PBP. I do not see this? Where is it and where do I drag and drop it to?

Thanks for any help.

x3sphere says:

First of all this is nowhere to be found in the included instructions. You should download the update from the links here, not Sendspace.

Also... as stated in the post, 4.01 M33-2 is an update for 4.01 M33. You can't go directly from 3.90 M33-3 to 4.01 M33-2. You'll need to install 4.01 M33 first, then update to 4.01 M33-2. Hopefully that makes more sense.

I recommend checking out the 4.01 M33 installation guide here: http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=7669

homn says:

Is the official 1.50 firmware update have to be on the root of the memory stick, for the 1.5 Kernel Add-on, to install?

homn says:

Never mind, I found the link to the Installation instructions for the 1.5 Kernel Add-on.

silver_surfer says:

sir with all due respect I was able to Update to CFW 4.01 m33-2 from CFW 3.90 m33-3

ms0:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE

UPDATE folder contains EBOOT.PBP from 4.01 m33-2

update and Sony's OFW renamed to 401.PBP.

SHOCK says:

i've been waiting for this update for some time..

but verson 4.01 m33-2 does have some minor problems when i upgraded my psp slim.

there were freezing in the xmb, during navigating, and it would shut my psp down. for now i downgraded back to 3.90 m33-3 and wait for the next update.

Acerthief says:

I'm having no problem with 4.01M33-2.

Maybe it was a bad flash, or you've used a faulty memory stick.

RJC4LIFE says:

No probs here, popsloader 380v2 works now? Ok, cool.Tested it last night,it worked for every game I have.Is a newer prx coming out though that supports 380,395.etc.?

LOICE says:

please can someone take out flah o back up for 4.01m33-2

web872 says:

if i install this update of 4.01m33 will i lose all my data on my memory stick like all my backups and apps ?

do i have to backup my files?

American-Seller says:

Hello everybody!

I've just finished installing the new firmware 4.01 M33 with the update 2 and Kernel for 4.01 and everything whent just perfectly. But when i formated my 8GB Memory Stick through the PSP i started to detect only 4GB instead of 8GB. Did this happen to anybody else? The Card is original Sony and it was working fine with the 3.90 firmware with latest update. This just happend with this firmware. Please help me. Thank you!

x3sphere says:

Are you sure it is not a fake memory stick? This usually happens on fake sticks...

Were you able to use the entire 8GB space before upgrading to 4.01 M33?

Ledski says:

Hey I think I found a problem. when im playing the PSX version of FFVII it seems to be going a lot slower since i upgraded from 3.90, and im using posloader so maybe theres a problem with that.

Anyone else had this problem?

solarnoise says:

I had the memory stick mod to fix the lag issues, just upgraded to 4.01m33-2

Do I need to do the mod again or is it still there?

x3sphere says:

The fatmsmod patch will not work on 4.01 M33, but it seems like Sony has fixed the lag issues in this firmware.

deejay6901 says:

hi

whats the difference between the cxmb themes(which overwrites the flash0 folder) with the CTF theme? are they just the same or the cxmb is a compiled version of CTF. please help. thanks

x3sphere says:

All CXMB themes are in CTF format. To put it simply, it's basically a packaged version of all the theme files (similar to a ZIP archive).

Using CTF files is safer and easier since you can load themes directly from your memory stick, instead of replacing files on the flash0 - which, if you don't know what you're doing, can cause a brick. Plus, when using CTF files, you can change themes straight from the Theme Settings menu.

deejay6901 says:

yep i know. so i guess its better to use CTF rather than replacing font0 folder huh. as ive tried both methods. anyways. thanks again!!!!

cheers

American-Seller says:

Yes it's original. I had a fake one before this one but then i talked to the guy who sold me it and he trade it for a Original Sony because half of the games weren't detecting on the PSP. It even says Sony. And before the 4.01 firmware it was working fine detecting all 8GB but now it only detects 4GB on the PSP.

kentakluring says:

Im playing FFVII to but and have popsloader 3.80 v2 installed. But i dont cannot change discs. It doesnt say anything in my home meny about it. please help

kentakluring says:

BTW i have CFW 4.01 installed on my slim.

kentakluring says:

If it helps that is;)

RJC4LIFE says:

It won't if you didn't make a multidisc eboot, you did right? The option only shows up if you have a multidisc eboot from 371 and up.

x3sphere says:

I see, but were you able to actually use more than 4GB space on the stick before upgrading?

I would try formatting it on the PC using FAT32.

American-Seller says:

Yes i was able to use all space before this version. I formated the card on the PC with memory card reader and it's working fine now. It's detecting the 8GB. And after this i tried formating the card directly from the PSP menu and it's still detecting the full 8GB. Maby it was some bug during the update but doesn't matter now. Everything is ok. thank you for the help.

syk0413 says:

Hi Alex,

thx for your firmware release.

I using 3.81 M33-5 when I not upgrage to 4.01 M33-2,

in the older version, it is available to play DJ Max 1 & 2 normally, but when I upgrade to 4.01 M33-2, it also available to play the game, but I find that the X button and O button is exchange.

is it need other plugin to fix this issue.

look forward for your reply.

Acerthief says:

O and X can be changed in the "Recovery Menu" -> "Registry Hack"

NickyWave says:

Hi guys.

Could you tell me one thing?

Does this new firmware have the NO-UMD Driver like 3.90-3 M33?

Can i upgrade it directly from 3.90-3?

I'm kinda n00b on this!

thanks in advance.

And sorry for my english....i'm portuguese...

silver_surfer says:

@ NickyWave: yes you can update directly from CFW 3.90 m33-3 to CFW 4.01 m33-3.

just copy the UPDATE folder of CFW 4.01 m33-2 to ms0:/PSP/GAME

then download Sony's OFW 4.01 and rename it to 401.pbp and

copy it to ms0:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE

UPDATE folder should contain EBOOT.PBP & 401.PBP

tyz123 says:

hi im new to this forum and i want to get the best out of my psp phat ive got 4.01 official firmware ive never had cfw but i wont to get it could someone help me out plz :D also does it have a umd driver

silver_surfer says:

@ tyz123: you need a pandora kit to convert your official firmware psp to a custom firmware psp.

here's the guide

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780

tyz123 says:

what does the pandora battery do and i dont get it atall them steps say u need custom firmware first b4 the battery and magic mem

and i was watching a video the other day it said u need to cut the battery upen and take a chip off the circuit board lol what should i do first the battery or the mem card hav u got msn

silver_surfer says:

@ tyz123: with Pandora Battery (magic ms & jigkick mode battery) you could upgrade/downgrade your official firmware..

you need a cfw psp: to create pandora battery (soft-mod) no need to open (literally) the battery..

regarding the pin: this is the 2nd route (Hard-Mod) in making pandora battery if you can't source out another cfw psp..

maybe it's more appropriate if you ask this questions in the proper thread -> Here

tyz123 says:

it says u can skip the battery part and what does this magic memory card do and the tutorial its like bkwards lol also last thing how am i ment to create a magic memory card without cfw psp

silver_surfer says:

@ tyz123: you can skip the battery part if you already have a pandora battery (JigKick Mode Battery)

tyz123 says:

well i cant do it then cus i dnt no any1 with a cfw psp lool and what does the magic mem card do

silver_surfer says:

@ tyz123: you can do it but it's too risky to open your battery..

basically magic ms is a regular memory stick with a special IPL that enable your pandora battery to load/work

(so you need them both)

pspknightx says:

Find a friend who has a CFW PSP and is well-known in this to help you.

If not, you have to take your own risk > <

vuanhquan92 says:

hey guys, I'm new here, and I just brought my PSP from 3.71M33-2 to 4.01M33, after that, I copied the UPDATE folder of the 4.01M33-2 to PSP\GAME , which contain only the EBOOT.PBP file. And on the memory stick on the PSP menu, "there is no games here", what should I do???? and how can I play ISO/CSO games on this CFW 4.01M33-2, do I have to create GAME4XX or what???(after I update 4.01M33, I'm not formatted the memory stick yet cuz I want to save my Magic Memory Stick files)

OptimusPrim3 says:

ok im new to the psp homebrew stuff...

i got a phat psp and i already updated to fw 4.01 on wi fi

i didnt know there were any like custom firewares...

i want the M33

but when i try to do it all i get is error code 80020148

ugh, i cant downgrade and idk wat to do...

am i still able to get a custome firmware?

x3sphere says:

Make sure you are placing the ISO games in the correct folder (e.g. X:/ISO). If they still fail to show up try formatting your memory stick.

@OptimusPrim: No, not without the help of another person who has CFW. You need a Pandora battery and magic memory stick.

rasengan609 says:

so if i buy a psp slim new right now would i be able to install the custom firmware without installing the older versions first (or would i be able to install the firmware at all?)

Thanks in advance

heatzz says:

I have the same problem here, previous i was in 3.90 m33-3 now 4.01 m33-2.

I can only look-up my games after i when to photo/video run it so that the memory stick led flashes then i can look-up my games and load it.

Seems to be a delay or bug, anyone knows how to fix?

EDITED: I reformatted my MS and that fixed the problem.

B2K24 says:

scarredrealist says:

Has anyone else noticed that the "Fake Region" for UMD Movies option doesn't seem to work in this release?

I've done a little searching around and found one comment (elsewhere) which confirmed my testing, but nothing about a fix or workaround - I realise UMD movies are probably a little rare, but this is actually for a friend of mine who owns a number of UMD movies (of the wrong region, which is the whole reason I battled to get an M33 FW on his PSP in the first place.. d'oh!).

x3sphere says:

It isn't exactly a bug - the fake region setting is not for UMD movies, it's only there to activate certain firmware features that display depending upon the region.

Anyways, I don't believe there is a way of bypassing the region protection on UMD movies yet.

azhuroxiv says:

how come when I tried installing the 4.01 M33 I only got the black screen... saying

"Unpacking... done.

Hey guys, CFW novice(not quite a newbie but not even close to intermediate) here, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I might be doing wrong. I recently updated to the most recent CFW(actually noticed the issue after updating to 3.80) Some games I have may not work correctly. For Example..I have Mortal Kombat Trilogy(PSone) and it runs perfectly on 3.71 m33-4..I've noticed each PSOne games i've gotten has its own little Playstation Emulator..most notably P.O.P.S..However, the game itself(not the psp) freezes after a fight begins on 3.80 and up..but runs fine on 3.71 m33-4..I've had other PSOne games which would run weird too:confused1:..any advice is greatly appreciated

Hello folks,

Back in May 2008 I bought a new PSP Slim... off the shelf, original firmware.

Bought a pandora battery

Created a magic mem stick

I loaded CFW 3.71 M33-2

Added an 8GB memory stick.... Everything works great

Now looking to upgrade to CFW 4.01 M33-2

When I originally loaded CFW 3.71 M33-2, I dont believe I got the Dark Alex CFW code... or at least I didnt get it from this website.

I was a TOTAL NOOB at that point (not that Im much better now...). I downloaded something called the "theultimatepandorapack.rar" and I also downloaded soemthing called "the file you need.rar".

Honestly I cant recall which one I used to install the CFW... but after careful planning - I did the updgrad and it worked.

This is my question (and I apologize if its been asked already.. I did a lot of searching and didnt find my answer) :

Im not sure if all of the CFW ultimately comed from Dark Alex or if there are "varieties" out there. If I try to jump from what I have on my PSP now to DARK ALEX CFW 4.01 M33 (and then M33-2) will I run into problems?

I really want to ensure I dont brick this thing... and Im not sure what my next step should be to ensure the current CFW is compatible with an upgrade to Dark Alex CFW 4.01 M33.

Please help.

Thanks folks!

Hi

I would like to ask why my CTF Themes wont work? I just updated my fw to 4.01 M33-2 and also used the latest cxmb plugin(tried both 3.21, and exclusively 4.01) when i use the 3.21, i can only see 1 ctf theme(apollon) and at the same time i can see my other ptf themes, which should not appear since the plugin is already enabled. I cant see my other CTF themes.

Next, is when i used the cxmb plugin which is for 4.01 fw, i can see all my 4.01 CTF themes, but when i tried to apply them 1 by 1 only the wallpaper that comes with the theme appears and not the whole theme. can anyone please help me on this? i already tried all the possible methods, but it still ends up with this.

backup everything and format your memory stick.

Try changing the cpu clock and xmb clock to 333Hz (press select form the xmb), that would synchronize the xmb and eliminate the freezing during navigating.

I want to see if this has to do with this firmware so I would like to revert to 3.90m3. How to do it? I have a pandora battery with a magic stick that loads 3.80m5, but that does not some to work anymore because of the 4.x kernel.

I'm pretty sure you can use the Pandora Set to revert.

But still back up your NAND though.

Forger says:

You were right; I forgot to reinsert the battery. After reverting to 3.90 the problem still remained so it's not 4.01 that is causing the problem. It might be a faulty memory stick. I will retest this after I have bought a new one. A good excuse to buy a 8 gb stick:)

If I have 3.71 M33 can I just go and install 4.01 M33, then 4.01 M33-2 as explained on this site, OR should I install the firmwares in a particlar order. Also am I right in thinking that I can simply go to the normal PSP updater it will automaticly do it for me via wifi. OR should I just do it manually i.e. manually download it on my PC and transfer i to my PSP.please help.

silver_surfer says:

@ duderabbitww:

you can just directly update from CFW 3.71 m33 to CFW 4.01 m33-2..

the minimum requirement for CFW 4.01 m33-2 is CFW 3.52 m33

I just got an 8 gig stick and i put about 19 games on it and everytime i try to open the game folder to select a game to play, the psp freezes and shuts off.. Does anyone have a clue whats going on?:confused1:

Acerthief says:

format the stick and give it another try. the partition might be a bit messed up when you were copying the games in.

sonic1366 says:

I hit select or something, and it keeps looping between 84-99%

once it gets to 99% it goes down to 84%.

The only thing that couldve messed it up was the fact that i hit select.

how do i fix this?

HelStorm says:

i have recently updated my slim psp from 3.90-2 to 4.01-2 and everything was fine TILL i notice there was a small problem with it.. i've been playing FF crisis core for a while and the problem is, i'd get stuck in certain missions, eg.

B2K24 says:

you either need to re rip the game or backup everything to PC, format the stick in PSP then, retransfer back to stick.

It's also possible you had a crook firmware install. Reinstall firmware then reset settings.

Be sure CPU is set 333 mhz and march 33 no umd mode

bakemono1526 says:

Good Day! I have some friend tell me that the PSP Slim support only 4GB memory.

Is this true?

january39 says:

I do not think that is true, i Have heard that some Homebrew does not appear to function over 4gb of storage if using a 8gb card. far as i know 8gb cards will work fine.

Educate me if not though.........

I've tried many ways to get my old Fat PSP to kick into gear lately and I've finally upgraded to the newst 4.01 m33. However, I'm having trouble enabling ">> 1.50 Kernel addon for 4.01." I would love to know how to make this work since all I get is this fun little message exclaiming that I don't have 150.PBP in the Root file, the only person to mention this was on the first page of this post, any help is appreciated. If there is a guide, believe me I have tryed to look for it.

x3sphere says:

The 150.PBP is linked in the 1.5 kernel release thread:

http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=7674

It needs to be placed on the top-level (root) directory of your Memory Stick.

janakpandya says:

It doesn't work in my PSP Slim 3.95 Version

TheFuture says:

I'm kind of new to this because a good friend of mine would help me do this, but i decided to learn myself so i can stop bothering him, now what is 1.50 Kernel addon for? i updated to the newest my psp to 4.01 M33-2, do i need 1.50 kernel addon? thanks

january39 says:

The 1.50 Addon will kinda (very loosely) simulate 1.50 it's main use is for using 1.50 based Homebrew.

As slims cannot use 1.50 based anything this is why they do not have it or use it.

If your just playing games it is not needed, if you intend to use the Homebrew then it can be used, but if the Homebrew is using the 3.xx or 4.xx kernel then there's no need.

I have not heard of any sideeffects using it other than the loss of the korean font and the location free player - neither of which i use.

TheFuture says:

wait, so if i want to play downloaded games, i need 1.5 kernel? thanks january39, much appreciated

dannyk90 says:

i have followed all the instructions correctly and when i open the update on the psp it says The game could not be started. (80020148)

my psp is fat and currently on a clean version 4.01

january39 says:

If you are on 4.01 you mean M33? If you are, open recovery or VSH and select M33 Driver or Sony Np9660.

If you are on OFW the same error will mean the PSP cannot recognise the filetype

No Piracy talk here mate, read the rules please. You do not need the 1.50 addon simply to play games.

Hi Guys,

I am newbi here. I just bought a slim PSP with rev 4.05 on it. I want to update to M33 by following instruction above but I do not know if I need a pandoras battery and a magic memory or not? Can someone clarify this for me.

Thanks for helping me in advance.

Forger says:

More and more games showed the same instability; the game freezed while the music did not stop and after a soft power down/power up the game continued until the next freeze. I thought my memory stick was faulty. So I bought a new 16 gig Sony Mark 2. That did not solve te problem. I then replaced my analogue joy stick as that was not working ok, it did not move in one direction or often moved by itself. Tthat solved all my instability problems. I can now enjoy my memory card and can fully recommend it. Mark 2 is really speedy and is quite cheap, I payed 75 euro for a 16 gig stick with feels faster than the sandisk 4gig ultra ii which I bought 2 years ago for the same price.

webnapster says:

Yes you need the pandora battery and the magic memory stick...

Do you have a PSP Phat or PSP Slim?

You just said "psp 4.01", and if you want help, please be a little more detailed.

this message comes up:

401.pbp doesn't exist

do you want to download it from the internet.

i tried usng my net on my psp and it doesn't connect to my wireless internet

what should i do

Acerthief says:

Well, download 4.01.PBP

With a computer, not from a PSP though :P

method193 says:

it doesn't work man

i got 4.01 mm and it doesn't work.

january39 says:

It is named 401.PBP? if it is then i would suggest exactly as acethief obtain another 4.01 OFW eboot from a diff source.

If not....

mesmi says:

hi, i just wanted to know if there is an available posloader for Custom Firmware 4.01M33-2? thanks

january39 says:

I guess you have the popsloader? sounds like it & all the pops?

I am currently playing that, RE3 and i have been using 3.71 pops and so far working great. Only about 1/5 thru the game :)

amontebon says:

my psp is 4.01 m33 version. what if i want to download a game wihtout the 1.5 kernel add-on. Can i download a game without the 1.5 kernel add-on? or i really need to download the 1.5 kernel add-on

january39 says:

it is doubtful any game requires the 1.50 add on, that is more for homebrew.

Jonny002 says:

Hi

Every time i am running the update, i am getting the following message:

The game could not be started

(80020148)

Any idea what could be causing this and how can i get round it to update to 4.01 M33-2

january39 says:

Sounds like you might be on ofw, go to Settings>system information via the xmb, what does it say?

Jonny002 says:

It says

System Software: Version 4.01

Alex says:

If you have a PSP 1000 or 2000(slim) you can update to 5.03 and use the chickHEN and then run hellcats recovery flasher. But do not use hellcats recovery flasher if you have a 3k or a TA-088v3
