PSP Custom Firmware 4.01 M33

by Mike Bendel on June 28, 2008 @ 7:59 am

Esteemed homebrew developer Dark_AleX has released PSP custom firmware 4.01 M33. In addition to minor bug fixes, this edition of the M33 firmware series of course brings 4.01 kernel support, complete with multi-language support for Recovery Mode. Instructions can be found in the included readme on how to translate the recovery text to your native language. And no, this release does not include in-XMB recovery or savestate support. As Alek noted last week, those enhancements are still planned but will likely be added in a forthcoming update.

As usual, the firmware update can be applied directly via Network Update if you are running a previous release from 3.80 M33 and onward, or by following the manual installation instructions below, provided that you have a homebrew capable PSP.

* Extract the archive. * Copy included UPDATE folder to X:/PSP/GAME
* Place the official firmware 4.01 update EBOOT, named as 401.PBP, in the newly created UPDATE folder
* Begin installation from the Game menu.

If you require a more in-depth installation walkthrough, look here. Additionally, a 4.01 M33 specific 1.5 kernel add-on is due to be released within the next couple days, possibly tonight.

HAHA, skipped 4.00 and went onto 4.01 right away

GOOD JOB DARK ALEX!!!

bhutta1122 says:

Alex U have done a great job by dominating sony. can u please give divx or xvid codecs

x3sphere says:

BTW, if anyone is wondering, a 4.01 M33 specific 1.5 kernel add-on is coming within the next couple days (possibly tonight).

CoMbiNa says:

Hey, does the new recovery supports unicode and right to left text? (for foreign languages)

x3sphere says:

Right to left text shouldn't be a problem but I'm not sure if Unicode is supported. Best to just try it.

CoMbiNa says:

I don't wanna upgrade yet.

but what I mean in RTL text is:

In English, we write from LTR, in some other languages, we write from RTL.

Is that what you also mean?

x3sphere says:

Yeah I know what you mean. It shouldn't be a problem, Unicode support is the only thing I am unsure on.

CoMbiNa says:

ok thanks.

Can you explain me how the translator works?

(Like, opening a source file and editing, or it's a text file etc...)

Because I really don't wanna download this untill:

1. My favorite CXMB theme will be on 4.01

2. I'll insure all my homebrews from 3.90 will work with the 4.01 kernel (alot of NID changes as i've heard)

3. That's pretty much all:D

x3sphere says:

It's just a standard text file that you'll need to edit. Each line corresponds to one of the recovery menu items.

Hanzo_f19 says:

2 questions:

1- Does the fatmsmod work with this CFW? (Or did Sony fixed it?)

2-Does the popsloader work?

x3sphere says:

Using the patched fatmsmod PRX hasn't been tested, though it probably wouldn't work. As for popsloader, a new version is in the works.

Hanzo_f19 says:

oki doki.I'll wait for a new fatmsmod :p

Thanks

HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP

I just got my first psp and i updated to firmware 4.01 and when i try to install custom firmware 4.01 M33 (i put it in the right directory just like instructed) i get an error that says THE GAME COULD NOT BE STARTED. (80020148)

What am i doing wrong?

Hanzo_f19 says:

you need to have Custom Firmware to install 4.01 M33

oscare says:

mravec, you need a homebrew compatible psp to be able to upgrade to custom firmware. you need to use pandora's battery to upgrade to 3.90 m33 and from there upgrade to 4.01 m33.

Mravec000 says:

does anyone have a good guide how to use pandora batery?

RJC4LIFE says:

Today's my daughter's birthday so that alone makes today a beautiful day,but to get a new custom firmware makes it even better! Thanks as always Alexander..you're really not just an Illusion..

Hanzo_f19 says:

Now I'm curious. Do you know anything about this, x3?

icedman204 says:

Thanks DA for the update, now leaves with this question. what is the "improvements" in video playback?

Furthermore can't wait for the patches as well.

YoKo says:

As always when update arrives DAX's servers can't stand the pressure :)

Thanx Exo for mirroring the files, and for all you do to PSP community.

HOME PAGE for me ;)

icedman204 says:

I've tested a few 3.xx kernel homebrews and they seem to work so far :)

CoMbiNa says:

OK, I will update as soon as Large Original CXMB is released for 4.01 M33.

BTW, some1 tried Lua Player HM version 7 on this?

midnitdragoon says:

can i upgrade from 3.95GEN

x3sphere says:

Yes you can upgrade from 3.95 GEN. Someone already reported success in upgrading over at the FAQ forum.

@fearevil19: I don't know, most likely just for testing the region settings. He probably forgot to remove them.

Jake says:

For me the hide pic0.png and pic1.png option in the recovery menu wont change to enabled. When i press X on it, it doesnt change and the selection just goes to the back option.

Has anyone else had this problem?

`Rage` says:

DaX is the best.

May you live a long life on this CFW forthcoming earth XD

B2K24 says:

It seems the MS driver in 4.01 is much faster than 3.90.

I can scroll through 200+ pics lightning fast also switching pictures with R-trigger displays them much faster.

cyrus says:

ill wait till it a new version of popsloader comes out.. =)

frosty5689 says:

I highly doubt It'd make a difference if you bought a new psp and made the 3.80(yes the new slimline models coming off the shelves are now embedded with 3.80 instead of 3.60). 3.80 OFW or 4.01 OFW doesn't make a difference. They both require a Pandora battery and a "magic" stick to install CFW. However, if you didn't even care enough to read and simply updated your firmware using network update while you're on a CFW that's lower than 3.80 M33, then I have nothing to say except "Sorry dude, you ownt yourself".

muhu says:

Actually, they ship with 3.90 as of four days ago when I bought mine. Nonetheless, 4.01 m33-2 is out now. Use the network update. 8)

Kagami says:

Well first of all, I don`t know much about psp modding or pandoras battery or anything like that. My friend modded my PSP for me a couple of years ago and just showed me how to get all of the "newly bought" games and emus etc working. Anyways, I "bought" a new game yesterday and it required a firmware update to work. I checked my current firmware, which was if I remember correctly 3.40. So noob as I am I tried to download and install the official firmware, which didn`t quite succeed. (I got the error message which has been refered quite many times in this thread) So... I did some random info gatherhing and came to the result that I need this 4.01 m33 thing firmware for my psp. I downloaded, installed it (Don`t think that I screwed something during that process. I may be a noob with psp`s but I am quite eduiqate with computers and I have done a lot of similar processes. Besides this is something a monkey could do if it wanted...) Anyhow back to the subject.. When I went to my PSP menu and selected the 4.01 m33 firmware and started the installation so to speak. My PSP`s screen went black and in the screen text strated appearing with the same font as in recovery mode btw. And the text says:

Unpacking... done

Please wait...

Now it has been there the whole night and I afraid that if I turn the psp off it will at least explode or something (that was not meant to be taken seriously)

So all that I`m askin is some help guys?

JOANANN says:

is there anyway to undo the process frosty.

zz.

once the version is updated it's updated?

xGrAffitix says:

Well I know I'm gonna regret asking this question, seeing as how people who were smart enough at the time not to upgrade their firmware think they are high and mighty, but I'll ask anyways.

I wanted to mod my brothers PSP, and I saw that he upgraded to the 3.95 OFW. I want to get a custom firmware, but frankly I'm just too damned poor to afford an extra battery and memory card, so I want to know can you upgrade 3.95 OFW to 4.01 M33? If not, are there any alternatives to pandora's battery for someone who has bills to pay and can't spend money on a 40 dollar memory card and battery?

Acerthief says:

You will still need a CFW PSP if you want to convert your own battery (soft-mod).

Hardmod not recommended.

Go to qj and search for an "newbie installer". That's what you need for the stick.

Be sure to use XP, not vista.

xGrAffitix says:

Well I did what you said, which by the way, thanks for your help, and it came up with a thing 'too many results' but it showed some, and the first result was 'Homebrew Installer Maker'. I'm just wondering if that's what I'm looking for.

ok heres my situation.... i have a custom 3.90M33-3 before, and then theres a 3.93 FW released which i have from PSPISO link. They said that this has a functionality of a customized FW i dont encounter problem when i upgraded from 3.90 to 3.93. So what im asking now is that is it ok to jump to 4.01M33-2 right away without downgrading or converting back to 3.90M33-3? is there a similarity with 3.95GEN2 jumping directly to the 4.01 CFW??

need help pls. Thanks so much

x3sphere says:

If by 3.93 FW you mean 3.93 GEN then yes there will be no problem with upgrading straight to 4.01 M33.

Ok I have psp phat running 3.90M33-3, I followed the updating instructions thoroughly and when the updating process begins, it stops at 92% and gives me a "technical error please contact the customer support" message. My psp freezes and when I restart it, it gets bricked.

I've tried updating several times and it's always the same.

please help

P.S:

1- when I unbrick my psp ... I install the CFW 3.90M33-3

2- I make the CFW 4.01M33 updater downloads the OFW 4.01 for me, haven't tried to download it manually and put it in the updater folder.

Acerthief says:

Maybe you have one of this problem:

1. You have corrupted IDStorage Keys.

2. You have a faulty memory stick.

3. Hardware failure.

Daigelmir says:

Thanks for the reply Acerthief:

I'm pretty sure that my psp is in well shape :P (no hardware failure) and my memory stick is not faulty (btw is there a recommended space requirement to proceed with the update? cause I use a 1 GB memory stick with 160 MB free space).

Now about the IDStorage Keys, how do I know if I have corrupted ones? I know that "KeyCleaner" fixes corrupted keys (I haven't tried this app) but does it show if I have corrupted keys or not?

thnx in advance

x3sphere says:

Yes you can install 4.01 M33 then.

@XTangible: You need a Pandora battery and magic memory stick. Read here: http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=6832

deejay6901 says:

thanks so much for your help. will try this later.

oh... and one last thing. in the recovery menu of the 3.93 CFW, there are options like hide the MAC address, create pandora battery, etc. will this be removed once applied with the 4.01 FW???

cheers

x3sphere says:

4.01 M33 firmware does have a similar recovery menu, but it doesn't have the options you listed specifically.

XTangible says:

if i do the pandora and magic mem stick am i just basically throwing them away? or can i convert them back? please reply!!!!!

x3sphere says:

No you can convert them back but you will need a PSP already running custom firmware in order to perform the conversion process.

Also some of the newer PSP slims are unable to change the eeprom of the battery depending on motherboard the slim has.

x3sphere says:

Yeah just upgrade to 3.52 M33-3, then you'll be set to install 4.01 M33. No need to go any further than that.

@vandmike: First back up any important data and try formatting your memory stick on the PSP to see if that fixes the problem. Also try re-downloading the 401.PBP. If the problem still persists, it's likely you have a fake or faulty memory stick.

Ceemax says:

My friend has one of the first psps (phat) and hasnt updated his ofw...can I pandorize my battery on his, and use the pandora on mine?

x3sphere says:

What OFW version is he running? You'll first need to install custom firmware on his PSP, then then yeah you can covert your battery to Pandora. The battery can be used on any PSP.

Ferrous says:

I have two PSPs, both at 3.52 M33-3. The first PSP I tried to update did the same thing as vandmike's, sitting there saying "Unpacking... Done. Please wait..." And it does nothing. The other PSP worked fine.

So I switched memory sticks and and it does the same thing. Both memory sticks got formatted, too. How do I go about fixing this? Apparently Fluid fixed it by renaming the kernel to 3.52. How do I do that?

Chilly Willy says:

In the recovery menu is an option for which kernel 3.52 (or older) cfw uses when you run stuff from GAME. You MUST set that to 3.xx or the PSP will try to run the updater as 1.50 software (which it is not). Also, in case someone didn't mention it elsewhere - turn off/remove any custom themes or plugins before trying to install custom firmware. It's okay for minor updates like 4.01 M33 to 4.01 M33-2, but it's NOT okay for major updates like 3.52 M33 or even 3.90 M33 to 4.01 M33. Having a custom theme set and then doing a major update is the leading cause of bad flash1 partitions after updating.

Ferrous says:

How do I get to the recovery menu? Kinda slipped my mind.

Chilly Willy says:

Hold the right trigger (shoulder button) while powering on the PSP.

Ferrous says:

Fixed, and thank you very much, Chilly Willy. I now am updated.

For those of you who are having troubles, just hold R to get to the recovery menu and change the game folder that it runs from to 3.xx.

Then update.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated...

Azurial says:

Alright I discovered that this is because I did not set the kernel to 3.52 in recovery mode. Now the problem is that when I try to update it says "must have firmware 3.52 M33 or higher. And that is what I have.

x3sphere says:

Hmm, which 3.52 M33 version are you on? You actually need to be running 3.52 M33-3 or higher.

http://exophase.com/files/psp/M33-1234.zip

If the problem still occur, maybe is your memory stick problem.

Are you using fake or original MS?

You can check it by pointing to "Memory Stick" in the XMB. Then press the Triangle button and select Information. If it shows supported, it is original.

Using Fake MS always facing lots of problem.

Custom Firmware supports lots function then the Official Firmware. However, if you want to go back to OFW, you are always welcome to do so. But you cant go back to CFW anymore unless you have pandora battery + magic stick.

From CFW > OFW = 100%

From OFW > CFW = 0% (99% with pandora, the remaining 1% due to some careless mistake or whatever XD)

gnash says:

so i know i skipped pages is the 1.50 kernel support up yet and is that what i have to have to keep playing homebrew? running 3.9 m33-2 right now not having probs so thinking about leaving as is nahmean

x3sphere says:

No, you don't need the 1.5 kernel for most homebrew. Older applications, yes.

akiba1337 says:

hey can somebody help me?

I accidently installed it without the 401.pbp so now it just say in the system info 4.01, so can i still upgrade it to 4.01 m33?

plz somebody reply

x3sphere says:

You need a Pandora battery and magic memory stick. 4.01 M33 can only be installed on a PSP running custom firmware.

There is a guide on creating a Pandora setup here: http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=3780

You'll need to use another PSP running CFW to complete the steps, though.

akiba1337 says:

i already had a custom firmware before doesn't this mean i have a pandora battery and magic memory stick?

x3sphere says:

No... unless you followed one of the Pandora guides in the past and still haven't converted your battery back. If you want to check if you have a Pandora battery, boot your PSP without any memory stick inserted. If it boots to a black screen, then the battery is a Pandora.

akiba1337 says:

thank you soooooo much for the help  I'm sorry that I wasted your time :glare:

fastfood says:

Hi guys,

thanks for all the effort! x3sphere, I can't believe how cool you stay with the noobs that don't bother to do a little research before they post. :confused1:

Yes, I have a small contribution to this forum.

First my story:

I ran 3.40 OE happily for 1,5 years now on my fat PSP and finally decided to move up to the M33 thingies as I bought the GPS receiver for the PSP which needed 3.80.

I installed the all the prerequisites to 3.52M33-4 and succesfully installed 4.01M33 thanks to you guys. Ah yes, also had the problem with the "Upacking.... done. Please wait" ... those were some scary minutes, but easily fixed by visiting the recovery and setting it to 3.xx kernel: thanks Fluid!

One more thing; all of this was done with a fake memory stick. Although it is not recommended, it IS possible. Yes I know; I took a risk.

Now my point/question/problem:

Before playing with the GoExplore thingy, I tested the 4.01 installation and got scared to death as I entered the settings > video settings or theme settings. It said "Internal error" and the screen to reset EVERYTHING appeared (which I remembered from downgrading to 1.50). I switched it off entirely and luckily everything was fine when I turned it on again.

Strangely enough, I can't reproduce the problem now.

I didn't have an UMD loaded at the time.

Anyone else had this fright?

so if i went to cfw how can i get the ps1 working??

x3sphere says:

You just place converted PSone games in the GAME folder, then run them from the PSP's Game menu.

i.e. X:/PSP/GAME/XENOGEARS/EBOOT.PBP

A guide on how-to convert your games to PSP format can be found here: http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=2047

after trying and trying to get this upgrade to work and all it was, was as simple as switching kernel over to 3.25 m33 god haha thank you everyone.

Apologies if I am going over old ground here but would like some clarification on the process.

I have a fat PSP running Sony version 4.00, I would like to upgrade the CFW 4.01 M33, having reviewed endless you tube vids, and forums the process appears to be different for fat and slim PSP's.

The questions I have. For the fat PSP do I

Need the Padora Battery

The Magic Memory stick

Need to the 1.50 Kernel and should this be installed ahead of the cfw.

Or can I go straight the downloads and update my psp as it is without the need for above.

Once on the cfw, I do understand the process.

NoobKilla says:

I just bought a psp and I wanted to add custom firmware. Can I skip all the way to 4.01 M33 or do I have to update my psp to every version first?

x3sphere says:

The process to install CFW is no different on a fat. If you're running 4.00 official firmware then you'll need a Pandora battery and magic memory stick.

@roro2010dude: There is always the small chance that the PSP will brick during a firmware update (as is the case with all electronics). I wouldn't worry about it, though.

@NoobKilla: It depends on which firmware you have installed. The only requirement to install 4.01 M33 is that you are running 3.52 M33-3 or higher.

I have the same problem as i've read a few users had before with my psp's update failing at 92% always. This has been reported numerous times on other forums as well and im wondering if any solution has been found yet?

Instead of network updating mine through wifi I just downloaded the custom fw files and official 4.0 through the sony webpage. Cleaned my keys as well and am using a sandisc 1gig as my magicstick/ updating device. I had problems updating to 3.90 as well before and believe that I may have hardware issues because of it.

Also im using a Fat psp version 1001 with a TA-079/81 Motherboard, "not sure if that helps at all but may identify a possible problem if other users with the same hardware come across the same errors"

The only possible solution ive come across is to wait for a upms/ pandora bat to be able to upgrade straight from brick to 4.01 : /

**EDIT**

Also does the same for 3.95

I'm no expert, but I have a few suggestions. First would be to open the recovery menu (Hold R [or is it L and R?] while booting your psp, go to the configuration settings, and make sure that the Game folder Homebrew is set as the 3.XX kernal. Second would be to make sure that the Update folder is in the ms/psp/game folder, and not the game 3.XX folder. Not sure if this will help at all... like I said, I'm no expert.

As for your games not running, I was wondering, are using an 8GB memory stick? Because I am having a problem with mine, so I post my problem again hoping for suggestions!

I'm running 4.01 M33-2 with a 1.5 add on, but It won't read more than 4GB of my 8GB memory stick! Suggestions? PLEASE!

i just got a modded PSP with firmware 3.80 M33 on it. so I decided to update via network update to get this 4.01 M33 update. as you said in the first post, if you are running on 3.80 M33 or later, you can update via network update to 4.01 M33. But after I updated, I now have firmware 4.01 (no M33...) and the games that were on my memory stick don't show up....

did my PSP get unmodded or something?? can someone please help me out, is there any way to fix this? thanks

richardsonrich says:

ok. You did "unmod" your psp. You weren't supposed to do a network update from the psp menu. What you needed to do isn't important anymore, but basically, you needed to download the 4.01 m33 update app, and run it on your psp, which would then download via the network within the program. Like I said, it's not important now.

To fix it, you will need a friend with a psp running custom firmware who is willing to help you. Instructions on what to do are here http://forums.exophase.com/showthread.php?t=6832

Turn it off, press the R button. Switch from 1.50 kernel and put it on 3.52 kernel or greater. then exit and redo the update and it should start ^_^. You cannot upgrade with 3.40 oe-a. So you will need to upgrade with 3.52.

And no it will not brick if you turn it off when it is hanging on please wait.... (wait at least thirty seconds)

zEPHIROTh says:

Hello, this is my situation:

-Been using Dark Alex 3.90 M33 CFW for two weeks

-Was playing some ol' PSX games on PSP (sweet) I.Q., Parasite Eve w/o issues

-Then I tryed to play FFVII, the game started OK, passing the first FMV, but then on the first battle **crash**

-Reading some forums got the info about Dark Alex 4.01 M33-2 CFW being friendly with FVII and its "issues"

-So I installed 4.01 M33-2 CFW, no problems at all.

--Till now--

-FFVII works great, but now that I want to play Parasite Eve, the game doesnt pass the PlayStation Screen.

Is someone experiencing this kind of problems too?

What type of error may be?

Can be fixed?

Is there a list of games incompatibilities about this 4.01 M33-2 CFW?

How can I keep playing the only two PSX games Im interested to play on my PSP 4.01 M33-2?

Thank you.

PD: I allready try runing 4.01 M33, same problem FFVII runs OK, PE doesnt; a mod from another forum suggest that I must add popsloader "in order to run some games" that said I put the "seplugins" folder to the root of my PSP Memory Stick with no changes. I read all the 15 pages on this thread, found some clues abut what may be the solution, still need some expert advise.

zEPHIROTh says:

I think you are runing 4.01 OFW in your fat PSP, if thats the case, you can only use CFW thru a Pandoras Battery and Magic Stick. Give a read from the begining of the thread, most people think they can just update from an OFW to CFW.

x3sphere says:

@zEPHIROTh: Although I've not personally tested it, most likely Parasite Eve is incompatible with the 4.01 POPS. If it worked fine in 3.90 M33, then nothing is wrong with the game file.

You'll have to wait until D_A releases a 4.01 M33 compatible build of popsloader, so you can use the 3.90 POPS for this game.

Tom__ says:

Hey, I have a problem..

in my PSP I have official firmware 4.05

my Question Is ..

Can I Custom firmware,change a 4.05 to 4.01 m33

and How?

please, HELP ME...Quickly...

zEPHIROTh says:

Yes I was thinking something like it, the problem now is that I dont know how to run the previous 3.90 POPS on my 4.01 M33-2.

If you can redirect me to some info about how to do that, I'll be gratefull.

Thank you.

EDIT: About FFVII issues found some info here PSX on PSP Compatibility List so I downgraded to 3.90 M33-3, activate the 380m33 Popsloader v2 plugin thru Recovery Mode, set the POPS to 3.71 and then .... nothing happens, it froze on the POPS Select Screen. Im really sad.

EDIT2: Same goes for Parasite Eve on 4.01 M33-2. Popsloader Enabled, switching POPS to 3.71 and the POPS Select Screen just stand there. -_-

FINAL EDIT: Finally got Popsloader working thanks to the info on this thread.

Installed 4.01 M33-2 to run FFVII then switching to 3.71 M33 to play Parasite Eve, working fine so far.

Must Thank to all the 1337 people who contribute with all that information.

There is no need to install popsloader to play PSone games. Further more, a 4.01 M33 compatible build of popsloader does not even exist yet. It's possible that the game you are trying to play is corrupted, or it simply does not work, as not all games work with the emulator.

Well Sony makes changes to the PSOne emulator with each new firmware release and they end up breaking compatibility with certain games at times. That's probably why your game stopped working after the upgrade.

Dark_Alex is rarely here, but he is an Administrator of this site. :w00t:

Alex says:

wow!

really?

awsome

lol

jx233 says:

Exophase.com is afffiliated with Dark-Alex.org. 8)

Also, here is proof of him posting here.

Alex says:

haha, it says he has 0 posts.

lol

jx233 says:

I think its a bug. Or it happens when someone has not verified their account yet. Wierd.

deckman98 says:

i did see a alek once !?

(hi guys)

jx233 says:

There is an Alek registered here. I am not sure whether it is the real Alek or just another member.

deckman98 says:

maybe...

jx233 says:

Probably not. If the real Alek was registered here, then he would be an Administrator or Staff member here.

deckman98 says:

oh yeah, it doesnt say he was an admin

jx233 says:

Its still cool that Dark_Alex is an Administrator here. Its just he has own site to manage, that's probably why he's not here frequently.

Please do not double/triple post, there's an edit button.

As for putting Custom Firmware on your PSP, you can use this guide here to make a Magic Memory Stick. You'll need to make a Pandora Battery as well to use it though which may be more difficult since you're on official firmware.

amiel says:

how can i make a pandora battery??

Alex says:

actually, cant he just update to 5.03 use the HEN and use hellcats recovery flasher?

amiel says:

im sorry but I dont understand what HEN and "use hellcats recovery flasher" means.

january39 says:

Well, try googling those 2 words. Both are Applications designed to d/g PSP's.

Check the link in my signature for more info on the HEN and the CFE.
