Reeves: PSP Piracy Drives Hardware Sales, Sometimes

by Mike Bendel on June 19, 2008 @ 10:07 am

It’s clear that piracy on the PSP is a problem. We know it, and so does Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head David Reeves. But it’s not all bad, at least for Sony, as Reeves admits that piracy on the platform has driven hardware sales at times. On the whole, though, he isn’t happy about it, obviously.

There is a piracy problem on PSP. We know about it , we know how it’s done. It sometimes fuels the growth of hardware sales, but on balance we are not happy about it.

Following up to his previous statement, Reeves said that Sony will “unveil new ways to combat piracy soon.” Sounds good, but it sounds just like talk if you ask me, taking their previous efforts into account. We’ll see.

They should thank piracy.

It's the best thing that ever happend to the PSP.

I mean, wouldn't the PSP suck if every1 would run ofw?

90 bucks for a game, no homebrews, and many other limited options.

Yes, i agree with Combina, if there wasn't hacked fw, i wouldn't buy PSP

`Rage` says:

CFW's made the PSP the portable system of the century.

From infrared, (Which Sony bearly embraced...) down to straight up homebrewing.

I bought the PSP March 24, 2005 (Release Date).. and hadn't been so in love with it since I experienced the PSP hacking world nearly a year after I got it.

I still remember the Wipeout Internet Google hack, before the infamous Internet Browser came out for it.

Then the Nintendo and GBA emulators shortly after...

And IRShell making its #1 homebrew/shell impact on the PSP world..

All of that was done without the need for PSP .iso/cso downloading.. and it made the PSP such a better system inpsite of it.

(Nintendo's losses on N64/GBA roms doesn't affect Sony's mass profit in UMD sales. Which is minuscule anyways >_>)

If Sony could just embrace open Homebrew support on their OFW's, There'd be a mass reduction in UMD iso/cso Piracy..

But hey, i'll be honest, saving hundreds of dollars on downloading a bunch of .iso's, (of games that would take me a week or two to beat, then put back on the shelf for a long while) is a great aspect of being able to use a CFW..

But I think a lot of gamers would rather turn to an Homebrew supporting OFW, then using a CFW..

Both the average gamer, and Sony wins, if that happens.

Meh.. Thought? >_>

YoKo says:

Nice thought, but unfortunately SONY stays mute about it, and i think it will stay long time the same.. another word : No homebrew (coz then no money to Sony)
