Final Fantasy XIII Versus On Development Hiatus

Update: Square Enix responds, says Versus development is proceeding as planned.
According to a Famitsu interview with director Tetsuya Nomura, transcribed by fan site Forever Fantasy, development on Final Fantasy XIII Versus has entered a state of hiatus. Cue the obvious question: why? FFXIII is Square Enix’s numero uno priority at the moment and they want it completely finished before continuing work on Versus. As such, the entire Versus team has shifted over to work on FFXIII.
We still don’t have a solid release date for FFXIII, despite it having been announced way back during E3 2006. Taking previous statements made by Square Enix into account and the fact that playable code has not been present at any recent media event, it’s safe to say that the title won’t hit this year.
