One of the major perks of the PlayStation 3 is its PlayStation Plus service. This subscription-based feature gives users access to cloud storage, scheduled update downloads, and a bunch of free games. Up until now, no one’s been certain what role Plus will play as far as the PlayStation 4 is concerned. According to Sony, the service will be an important part of the experience with its upcoming platform.

“We’re very happy with the service that we’ve been able to offer with PS Plus,” stated SCEE President Jim Ryan on the PlayStation Blog. “It’s been really well received — the value is quite extraordinary and the take-up has trebled over the course of the past year. We definitely see that as a core part of the way forward. We’re not yet in a position to disclose our plans for the future of PlayStation Plus but there will definitely be a prominent role to play for it in the PlayStation 4 landscape.”

Well, that’s certainly great to hear. Plus is easily one of the best fee-based subscriptions available for a video game console right now. The reason for that is because rather than just taking your money, it gives you plenty back. While not every free offering is a winner, the addition of outstanding titles such as inFamous 2, Borderlands, and Darksiders certainly makes for an enticing product. Here’s hoping the PlayStation 4 greatly benefits from Plus integration.
