The upcoming Dead Island: Riptide will feature both a much darker storyline and a brand new character, revealed Deep Silver. Speaking to VG24/7, Creative Director Sebastian Reichert briefly explained new details surrounding the upcoming tropical zombie fest.

Riptide take place in the beautiful island setting of Palanai. Of course, that beauty will be distorted dramatically due to environmental conditions such as thunderstorms and monsoons. “Plot-wise, ‘darker’ is good description of where we’re heading, but of course we stay bright and beautiful on the outside,” explained Reichert. “We are taking a very special step in this installment and we are looking forward to see how the fans react to it.”

As for the new character, sadly, no details were shed on the protagonist. The four main characters from the first Dead Island will return, so players will now have five different personalities to choose from. Here’s hoping the newcomer adds something vastly different to the mix.

According to Reichert, “there will be a whole lot more to do” in Riptide. One example the creative director listed was the new weapon tracking system. Use a weapon extensively and the game will recognize that and allow you to be more proficient with that specific weapon. It’s a nice idea that hopefully translates well.
