NASA MMO Could Be Profitable

by Mike Bendel on April 23, 2008 @ 8:27 pm

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that NASA was seeking a development partner to assist in the creation of an educational-focused MMORPG under a “non-reimbursable Space Act Agreement.” Some immediately assumed that this meant NASA was asking developers to essentially work on an MMO for free, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

While NASA themselves will not directly fund the project, the chosen developer will still be able to receive monetary compensation through other means, according to NASA Learning Technologies manager Daniel Laughlin, who spoke with website GameCyte. Such other means could include selling the title via retail channels or by charging a monthly fee for subscriber-only content.
