Doom, Doom 2 for PS3 Will Run on Rage Tech

When Doom 3 BFG Edition blasts its way to consoles and PC later this year, it will not only feature an enhanced version of id Software’s Doom 3; it will also boast the original Doom and Doom 2. According to id Creative Director Tim Willits, the two classic Doom games will be running on a modified version of id Tech 5, which launched with Rage last year.

“We never released Doom 1 and Doom 2 on the PlayStation Network,” Willits told Joystiq. “So we’re like, ‘OK, what’s the easiest way to do this?’ And what the guys did instead of rewriting all the network support, [support for] friends, and all that kind of stuff, is they took Rage, took out all the ‘Rage‘ bits and put Doom 1 and 2 on top of it.”

Most FPS-loving PlayStation 3 owners are probably aware that Doom and Doom 2 were never released on the PlayStation Network. It was kind of a bummer for those folks — especially if they had never played the games — because id’s brainchild is a famed and iconic series that fans of the genre should definitely play. Luckily for those PlayStation 3 owners, they’ll finally get to do exactly that.

Oh, and if you’re afraid that Doom and Doom 2 are going to receive some HD coat of paint, worry not, purists, because that will not be the case. Though both games are running on id Tech 5, they’ll sport their classic graphics. I mean, sure, it would be kind of cool if the first two Doom games looked as amazing as Rage did, but that wouldn’t do much for nostalgia, and we love us some nostalgia!
