Epic: UE4 Not Intended for Wii U, But Licensees Could Still Use It

With Nintendo still flat out refusing to confirm specifications for the Wii U, no one really knows how it compares to the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of what’s under the hood. From what we’ve seen so far, the Wii U looks like more of a side-step in that regard. Not surprisingly, recent comments from Epic Games VP Mark Rein seem to echo that sentiment.

“I’ll state that I don’t think it’s our intention to bring Unreal Engine 4 to Wii U, but Unreal Engine 4 is going to be supremely scalable,” Rein told VG.

He added, “We’ll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could. But Unreal Engine 3 is a really good fit for that platform.”

Unreal Engine 3 being a “really good fit” certainly suggests that the Wii U is in line with PS3 and Xbox 360 as far as hardware specs go. On the flipside, it doesn’t mean we won’t see any UE4 powered titles hit Wii U, since the engine can scale to lesser platforms. It seems we might see a situation similar to toggling settings on the PC side — multiplatform Wii U titles could run on “low” settings, while the PS4 and next Xbox equivalents will run at “high” with all the knobs turned up.
