Mercenary Kings Is an Upcoming Shmup from Indie Dev Tribute Games

Remember WizOrb, that charmingly old school Breakout-inspired title that was released on PC and is currently planned for a PS Minis release? What made that game so memorable was the fact that it wasn’t just some Breakout rip-off. No, developer Tribute Games threw in some light RPG elements to make the whole thing feel fresh and fun.

Now, it looks like the studio’s doing it once more, though this time it’s testing its mettle with the 2D shoot ’em up genre. Mercenary Kings is the developer’s next project, and while we currently don’t know when it will launch or for what platforms, it definitely looks like a title worth watching out for.

Like WizOrb, Mercenary Kings will include some neat gameplay elements that aren’t typical in 2D shooters. For starters, players will get to do a lot of looting. You’ll come across a myriad of items and use them to customize and build your very own weapons. Judging from the trailer, it looks like a deep mechanic, and one that should make this shooter stand out from other similar 2D games.

Mercenary Kings will feature mission-based levels, and though the game is still in the early stages of development, there’s a big chance it may include a co-op mode. A shooter with co-op? Where do I go to give Tribute Games my money this instant?
