Doom 3 BFG Edition Arrives This Fall

id Software knows folks are itching to play the next Doom, but since it’s still a ways off, the company is releasing Doom 3 BFG Edition to ease the wait. The remastered collection features the original Doom 3, along with its expansion pack Resurrection of Evil. Also included are seven never-before-seen levels entitled “The Lost Mission,” accounting for “hours of new content.”

id is promising “greatly enhanced graphics,” improved rendering and lighting, and “a new check point save system allowing for smoother progression through the game.” Gameplay has been kicked up a notch too, allowing players to finally wield the flashlight and a weapon at the same time. Players had to constantly switch between the two in the original, which we presume was a constraint designed to add to the tension, but many found it frustrating.

Beyond all these enhancements, the aptly named BFG Edition will include copies of Doom and Doom 2. Yes, you probably already own both of these seminal classics on one device or another, but props to id for rounding out the package on all fronts. Look for the Doom 3 BFG Edition to release later this fall on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Pricing has yet to be announced.
