Rumor: New Wii Firmware Update To Block FreeLoader

by Mike Bendel on March 23, 2008 @ 4:03 pm

Late last Friday, Nintendo issued a Wii firmware update that, according to the folks over at WiiBrew, patches a known security hole in the console’s signature algorithm.

Recently, individuals have exploited this flaw to load modified content in various Wii titles. Apparently, Datel’s FreeLoader takes advantage of the same signature verification flaw. Does this mean that the update blocks the FreeLoader? Not yet, as the fix contained in the new update isn’t “activated” yet. When it is activated, most likely via an upcoming Wii game disc or another update, software that takes advantage of the exploit will no longer work.

At this point, if you have a FreeLoader, it’s recommend to stay away from future updates.
