Unreal Engine 4 To Target Next Generation Consoles

by Mike Bendel on March 13, 2008 @ 11:59 pm

In a recent Q&A session, Epic Games Lead Programmer Tim Sweeney revealed that the forthcoming Unreal Engine 4 will be geared towards the next-generation of console platforms, rather than the traditional PC.

Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft’s successor for the Xbox 360, Sony’s successor for the Playstation 3 – and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs, then that also. PCs will follow after that.

It’s a no-brainer business wise to focus on consoles, considering the rapid growth of the console market over the past couple years. Epic isn’t abandoning the PC, obviously, but we’re bound to see more console to PC ports from them in future. Gears of War being a prime example.
