Report: GSC Closes, STALKER 2 Cancelled

by Mike Bendel on December 9, 2011 @ 11:49 am

GSC Game World, developer of the well-received STALKER series for PC, has reportedly closed. 1c Ukraine’s Sergey Galenkin reports that the team has been “almost completely dissolved,” with only a few people left remaining.

The account further states that GSC failed to secure publishing agreements on the console side. Coupled with the high-cost and low initial return of developing exclusively for PC, resources were spread thin. Additionally, several images of concept art from the title have leaked, which can be viewed after the break.

Is this the end for STALKER? Hopefully not — there’s always a chance another studio could buy rights to the IP. 4AGames of Metro 2033 pedigree would be a prime candidate, but we’ll see.

What a shit show.

This is ridiculously disappointing. I hope the Metro team picks up the license, but it's probably going to be grabbed by Ubisoft or another large company.

Unfortunately, the chances of 4A picking this up may be slim to none. Basically, the CEO of GSC thinks 4A stole their engine. Also THQ (4A's closest publisher) stock tanked yesterday and there have been reports of layoffs earlier today.
