One of the reasons Sony sided with a proprietary memory card format for its PS Vita handheld was due to concerns over security, SCE VP Senior VP Yoshio Matsumoto revealed in an Impress Watch interview.

Additionally, Sony wanted to ensure that consumers would need not worry about the technical aspects of their memory card purchase — such as its performance. In the world of SD flash memory, there are different performance tiers, split into speed classes.

“The goal was to deliver a memory card with guaranteed performance,” explained Matsumoto. “To ensure security was an also an aim.”

The PS Vita launches December 17 in Japan.
