Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive Officially Axed

You knew it was only a matter of time, right? In light of Toshiba’s recent decision to close the doors on its high-definition HD-DVD format, Microsoft sends word that they, too, are dropping HD-DVD. Effective immediately, the company will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360.

As a result of recent decisions made by Toshiba, Hollywood studios, and retailers, Microsoft plans to withdraw from HD DVD. Xbox will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox 360, but we will continue to provide standard product and warranty support for all Xbox 360 HD DVD Players in the market.

Microsoft firmly believes that the decision to drop HD-DVD will not have any material impact on the 360 platform or their current position in the marketplace.
