Sony Reveals Digital Discounts for UMD Owners

by Mike Bendel on November 11, 2011 @ 6:03 pm

Sony is launching a currently Japan-only initiative dubbed UMD Passport that will allow existing UMD owners to purchase digital conversions of titles they already own at a discount for PS Vita. Previously, the idea was merely being considered, but now it’s official.

How does it work? The program, which is run on a PSP — presumably for verification purposes, prompts users to register their UMD disc by following the on-screen instructions. From there, the title will display on the PS Store at the discount price.

Sony has offered up a complete list of eligible titles, with prices ranging from the 500 to 1500 yen mark ($20 US). Bare in mind the program has not been announced for other regions at this time. Given currency rates and licensing, pricing and available titles would of course differ if SCEA and SCEE roll out equivalents.

I love the idea. Hoping NA version of the same thing is a bit cheaper and I doubt I'll be doing this for every PSP game I own, but for the few I'd like to move over I'll deff look into it.

The fact that we have to pay for games we already own and that it will be limited to companies they can license their games from is absurd.

This is not the way Backwards compatibility should work.

It's all an excuse just to make sure that a few individuals can't get and play games they've borrowed from friends and rented for free.

Meanwhile those who don't have access to the PSN are screwed over, even if it is a marginally low amount of people.

No. UMD is a shit format and I am very glad Sony are doing away with it. If you wish to play UMDs you can do that on a PSP.

While I agree with you true-as-hell statement, I have to disagree with Sony's dealing of the PSP to Vita game "trade-in" (term I use loosely xD). Why should we have to buy things we already own? With this complex system they've created, the could easily give a unique code to each copy of the UMD to ensure it isn't re-used to give away more copies, and just let us have the game we bought for free. Or at least for like $1 or $2. Knowing Sony's store pricing policy, most relevant games we own will cost upwards $10, IF they are in the Store.

Trigun says:

UMD is hardly shit, since the days of the PSP-2000 load times have been a thing of the past. (Even more so with games and installs now days)

It can hold almost 2GB of data which is PLENTY enough for 99% of games (The 1% being the couple of games that are double-UMD).

And game's don't scratch easily at all.

So I fail to see how bad it is.

The only remotely bad thing about is the sound the drive makes when reading a disc. Which itself isn't even annoying.

When you make a successor to a current system. Backwards compatibility is near STANDARD these days and keeps the library at launch open to the less congested times of 1st generation software.

And it's been this way for a long time.
