Sony Tweaking PSP Hardware

by Mike Bendel on February 16, 2008 @ 6:57 pm

According to an FCC document submitted February 14, Sony is requesting an “Class II permissive change” for FCC ID AK8PSP2001, which we assume pertains to the PSP-2000 series.

The document goes on to note, “we change parts other than a wireless module. This is not to cause any modification to the mentioned electric characteristics and RF characteristics.”

Further details on the hardware change are provided in the “Theory of Operation” document, which Sony has requested to be held confidential. Don’t expect any major hardware changes here as that would warrant a new model number. Instead, it’s safe to assume that Sony is making a minor change to one or more of the hardware components inside of the PSP, presumably to cut down on manufacturing costs or to block the infamous Pandora hack.

The last change they made was to prevent writing to the battery to make a pandora's battery, so this is almost certainly a change (or complete removal) of the service mode to prevent the use of a pandora's battery made/bought elsewhere.

We know that Sony has been working on a new release for sometime because while preparing 3.80 M33, team M33 found a file called "pspbtcnf_03g.bin" whose brother "pspbtcnf_02g.bin" had new codes for slim PSPs and was released prior to them.
