LightMP3 2.0.0 Alpha

by Mike Bendel on February 13, 2008 @ 11:50 pm

Developer Sakya has released an extensive update to his lightweight audio player for the PSP, aptly dubbed LightMP3. Still in its alpha stages, the updated player utilizes Brunni’s OSLib toolkit, featuring an ergonomic interface that is highly customizable.

Keep in mind, though, that this release is for testing purposes only. As the author points out, certain features such as FLAC playback and USB access are not working properly in this build.

just wondering but has noone thought to try and port over Rockbox?...... :\

Chilly Willy says:

The main problem with porting PC music players is the lack of any frameworks. Most PC apps use something like .Net or WxWidgets or GTK+ or QT, etc. None of these are available for the PSP. That means significant effort has to be put into porting the app, replacing calls to the framework with something else.

Rockbox isn't a PC based music player...

thats from their site.I use it on my 4th gen iPod :)

reaaaally nice and customizable interface :)

MenaceInc,

Well, the PSP already has several ways to play music, and I don't think that Rockbox even has the need to be ported over. However, it's a custom firmware, not just an application for the devices. This means it would be overwriting the PSP's custom firmware and putting in a firmware that's made only to play media files on small portable media players.

Unless you were to port Rockbox as a homebrew application that doesn't run as the firmware, well, then I'm not really sure what the point is. You'd have to recreate the theme system, replace all of the calls to the custom Rockbox drivers, and I'm not sure how much the drivers are 'weaved' in with the other, interface, code.

Really? I might have to check it out then. If it doesn't require some kind of nasty framework, it should be able to be ported to the PSP.

MenaceInc says:

it doesn't replace the firmware completely since even on my iPod i have access to both the original and rockbox system but it does let it load it off the HD.i was just wondering about Rockbox because the way it allows customisation is reaaally nice i thought with all the custom themes for it.it's not something you see in many of the media players for the psp except lightMP3. although i wouldn't be using my psp for playing music anyway since i have my iPod.lol

Clint says:

Unfortunately, you're incorrect. Rockbox does replace the iPod's firmware, as well as the bootloader. You've just got it setup where the bootloader allows you to go to Apple's firmware or to Rockbox. Rockbox still functions without that firmware, meaning it uses its own drivers, theming system, etc.

Besides, the themes wouldn't work on your PSP unless people made new themes to fit the PSP's resolution. So, the iPod themes and other themes wouldn't work anyway.
