Nintendo: AAC To Replace MP3 Playback On Wii
by Mike Bendel on November 13, 2007 @ 9:42 am

Nintendo has revealed that as of next month December, the Wii will no longer officially support MP3 playback, but rather AAC. The change will affect Wii consoles purchased in December, as well as those who download and install the new Photo Channel 1.1 update, which is also due for release next month.
There’s nothing wrong with AAC, it’s a superior format when compared to MP3. However, it’s not as widely used. I can’t understand why Nintendo isn’t choosing to keep both. No doubt, removing MP3 will cut down on licensing costs, but I’m quite sure Nintendo can afford it. Sounds to me like they’re just being cheap, really.
