The cyberpunk genre will see another contender enter the fray later next year. Starbreeze of The Chronicles of Riddick and The Darkness fame is working on a revival of Syndicate, EA announced today. It’s a complete departure from the tactical real-time strategy approach of the original, promising a “brutal sci-fi first-person shooter experience set in a not too distant future.”

“We are excited to finally reveal what we’ve been working on the past couple years,” said Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark. “It’s been a great experience working with EA, and an amazing opportunity for us to use our expertise in the first person shooter and action genres to bring back, and reignite, the signature action/espionage gameplay of Syndicate.”

Fans of the original will welcome the espionage-filled plot, which explores the inner-workings of three mega corps – Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari, each vying for total control of the American market. Players will find themselves equipped with bio-chip technology known as DART-6, adding the ability to slow down time and “breach the digital world around them to take down their foes using a variety of upgradable hacking mechanics.”

It’s due out on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in “early 2012.” The first screenshots can be viewed over at VGIMG.
