August NPD: Deus Ex Human Revolution Tops Software Chart

NPD data from August is in, heralding Square Enix’s well-received cyberpunk FPS Deus Ex Human Revolution as the top-selling title of the month across Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Overall, though, it was hardly a rosy month for the industry. Sales were down 23 percent on a year-over-year basis. Only portable hardware saw an uptick in sales, thanks in large part to the 3DS price drop. NPD attributed the steep drop-off to the lack of Madden NFL 12, which was moved from its usual late August release to September.

“All platforms (if you combine DS and 3DS) saw unit sales increases over July. The 3DS price cut drove portable hardware sales into positive territory, to a year-over-year increase in both unit and dollar sales. The PS3 price cut also drove a notable uptick in sales of that platform,” noted NPD analyst Anita Frazier.
