EA Labels Boss Not Convinced Next-Gen Consoles Are Needed

EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau has downplayed the need of next-generation consoles, stating his belief that the current crop of HD consoles — PS3 and Xbox 360 — provide enough value for gamers. In fact, Gibeau says it’s hard to make a justification for new hardware at this point in time, given the potential cost of transitioning.

Gibeau told CVG, “It’s hard for me to conceive what you would do on a PlayStation 4. The displays are already 1080p, you’re already connected to the internet… You could make it faster, you could have more polys and you could up the graphics a little bit… but at what cost?”

Further, Gibeau added that the days of ‘big console transitions’ are over, suggesting that the next leap may be more incremental in the sense of building on top of existing platforms such as XBL and PSN. Which makes sense, given how much has been invested in both online networks.

“I think that [the age of] big, abrupt change in consoles where we all pile in on top of each other and everything changes overnight is just gone.”
