Rumor: $99 PS2 In 2008

by Mike Bendel on November 2, 2007 @ 9:56 am

According to UK outfit MCV, Sony is set to introduce a new PS2 model at the beginning of next year for only $99, down from the current retail price of $129.

The new PS2 model is said to be more compact, sporting a built-in power supply, which will allow Sony to manufacture the console at a slightly more economically viable price.

$99 is one heck of a good deal. If true, I reckon Sony will be using the new price point to attract those who bought a 40GB PS3 and still want to play PS2 games.

hmmmz. i guess sony is still getting more PS2 games... i believe this would just hurt PS3 sales some more. Because why buy a 40GB PS3 for $299 (or was it 399) plus $99 (oh dont forget you have to buy memory cards which are still at $30 each the sony brands i mean) = $400??? when just get the 80GB for $499 you get PS2/PS1 compatability. Greedy on Sony's part there.

But oh well to each their own.

Well you got to think that a lot of people don't want a PS3, but love the PS2. I don't think this move is for the 40gb PS3 owners, more like to get more people into PS2. I think PS2 will be dishing out good games until 2009. And you know what, by all means go ahead. I love when game systems stay alive for that long. If people still play the games then keep making them. I think that Sony got into this gen race way to early and way to unprepared. Thats why the PS2 is getting more play then the PS3.
