GameStop Removing OnLive Codes from Retail Deus Ex Copies, Selling Them As New

Wow. We can’t imagine this will go over well. While retail copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution contain a separate activation code to access the game through OnLive as well as Steam, GameStop isn’t having it. The retailer has sent out a memo to store employees, ordering them to discard the code from all new copies of game.

First obtained by GameSpy, a photo of the memo is above. “Please immediately remove and discard the On Live coupon from all regular PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Our desire is to not have this coupon go to any customers after this announcement,” reads the letter.

GameStop rep Beth Sharum also confirmed the practice, stating that “Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons.”

Yet another reason not to give GameStop your business. It will be interesting to see how Square Enix takes this.
