Battlefield 3 Origin Pre-Order Nets ‘Early’ Beta Access

by Mike Bendel on August 1, 2011 @ 5:49 pm

If you were looking for a reason to pre-order Battlefield 3 on EA’s Origin, here it is: anyone who forks over $59.99 right now will receive ‘early’ access to the upcoming Battlefield 3 beta test.

There’s still not a firm date on when the beta will begin, though it’s expected to kick off sometime in September.

Additionally, as previously revealed, those who pre-order will receive the Back to Karkand expansion pack at no extra charge, which includes four fan-favorite Battlefield 2 re-imaged in DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine.

I hope I get the stuff too since I only had to fork over $23.

Tempting but I'm not going to be using Origin. I'll play it by ear and probably purchase the Xbox 360 version with my friends and wait on the PC version.

I was about to pre order it from direct2drive but I may be willing to use shitty origin for early/beta access in general. I'm still upset about it not being on steam and still want to hold out on purchasing it incase it does show up on it or just use another vendor.

x3sphere says:

Someone on reddit contacted EA support and they said it'd be available through Steam on release day. No pre-order option though. Don't know if that's true or not, but wouldn't be the first time it's happened.

El Xando says:

Sorry to bump an old thread, but my god is EA and Origin ridiculously annoying.

I'm on holiday in Spain at the moment, and just thought I'd go on the Origin Store because I preordered BF3 there and just wanted to have a look. I went on and it region detected that I was in Spain - fine I thought, I'll just change the location to the UK on the store. When I clicked the flag to change location however, it just took me to the spanish EA website. I then changed to UK there, and it was fine, everything changed to English. I then used the Origin link to get back to the store, and found it to still be in Spanish. I then found the URL for the UK version of Origins site, but it redirects me to the Spanish site.

So I thought I may as well contact them and say there's an error. I went through EA UK > Support > Contact Us, where they immediately assume you are having problems with a game and ask you to enter a product. I entered Origin, and found Dragon Age: Origins so just selected that and luckily got asked if I wanted to use Live Chat support. I said OK, and this is how the conversation went:

Hi, my name is Smith. How may I help you?

Xander Harrison: Hi

Xander Harrison: There's a problem with the Origin Store.

Smith: I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing difficulties, and apologize for any inconvenience. Could you please elaborate your issue in detail for your better assistance?

Xander Harrison: I can't change my location on it, and because I am currently on holiday in Spain it think I am Spanish.

Smith: Okay, please carry on

Xander Harrison: If I click the Spanish flag to change location, it just takes me to the Spanish EA site

Xander Harrison: I can change to the UK there, but then when I go back to Origin it is still in Spanish.

Xander Harrison: Also, your "Contact Us" form on the support page is stupid as it only thinks you are contacting EA about a game, not a service or something else.

Smith: Please be aware that our Origin application is region specific. So being in Spain you would not be able to access it in English. It will open in the local language. I hope you understand.

Xander Harrison: I wasn't on the application, I was on the website, and even if it is so on there that seems a little silly.

Xander Harrison: I should at least be able to access it in English, even if it means I can't purchase anything as I'd be using the wrong currency for my locale.

Smith: Yes, Origin website is also region specific. And it opens in the local language by detecting your IP address of the system. So being in Spain you would not be able to access it in English.

Xander Harrison: It seems odd to make it region specific when the rest of the EA site isn't.

Smith: I do apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

Smith: Is there anything further I may assist you with today?

Xander Harrison: Yeah don't worry, it's obviously not your fault.

Smith: Thank you.

Xander Harrison: No thanks, just maybe pass a message up that region specific sites are silly - region detection is fine, but you should be able to manually choose.

Xander Harrison: Bye.

I swear it's like EA are just trying to frustrate their customers.

slicer4ever says:

lol, that's utterly retarded

El Diablo says:

And stuff like that is why people don't like being forced to use that for their games as opposed to much superior alternatives like Steam or even Direct2Drive or nothing at all.
