BioWare Calls Mass Effect 3 ‘A New Beginning,’ Future Installments Planned

by Mike Bendel on July 26, 2011 @ 1:25 pm

Despite being the final entry in a planned trilogy, Mass Effect 3 isn’t the end of the road for this beloved sci-fi franchise. In addition to wrapping up the current story arc, it’ll represent “a new beginning” according to marketing director David Silverman.

“We designed Mass Effect 3 to be a new beginning,” Silverman told CVG. He affirmed, “This series definitely doesn’t end with Mass Effect 3.”

How it will continue is anyone’s guess. Certainly, the Mass Effect universe is rich with lore, so BioWare has plenty to work with. Mass Effect 3 is due out on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on March 9.

should the mass effect universe continue? yes, will it be about commander Shepperd? i hope not

Adiuvo says:

I'm expecting Shepard to die at the end of ME3. Just a feeling.

MenaceInc says:

Again? I don't think they would bother rebuilding him after all the trouble the first time.

Adiuvo says:

Neither would I. For there to be a new storyline at the end of this current trilogy Shepard needs to be taken out of the picture somehow, unless they fast forward time by a huge amount. Asari live for around 1,000 years, so unless Bioware pulls a Transformers 2 level of mass-amnesia something has to happen to Shepard that prevents him from having a huge amount of influence past his death that the public would remember.

El Diablo says:

Could it not just be a story that takes place in a different part of the universe or on different planets, or even take place right after and you just don't play as shepard/see him very much? There's a lot they can do without killing him off, plus isn't he a human so how would he live for 1000 years?

I personally wouldn't mind a new story 500 years from this one where you know, something else happens and they reference shepard and past things that happened in the universe but a completely different storyline with different people and mostly different places years after this.

Craig Fairfax says:

I don't know how I feel about this. It sounds like they are going to just keep using the name Mass Effect on future titles just to make sure it sells. But if ME3 is the new beginning does that mean they'll introduce the future characters during ME3 (not the main character for obvious reasons). But I like the ME series so I'll remain interested until the games either start sucking or a new console comes out.

Joey says:

The universe is a pretty big place, there's no reason they couldn't have you play a different person with Shepard still alive. Don't know why Shepard being taken out of the picture is a prerequisite for future ME games.

Abe Froeman says:

I would be OK with playing Shepard again. It's clear that this story arc is coming to a close, just like the Gears trilogy. I'd be more than happy to play another Gears title with Delta squad, just as I would another ME title with Shepard.
