Epic Deems Bulletstorm ‘Not Profitable’

by Mike Bendel on July 25, 2011 @ 10:17 am

Despite shipping a respectable 300,000 units in its first month, Epic’s raunchy shooter Bulletstorm hasn’t been profitable, according to company president Mike Capps.

Capps told Kotaku that the title “didn’t make money for us.” How much was spent on Bulletstorm is unknown, but presumably, it must’ve had a sizable budget if it failed to break even at 300K.

While Capps refrained from delving into more details on the sluggish performance of Bulletstorm, the disappointing sales haven’t dampened Epic’s drive when it comes to developing new IP. The studio, together with Bullstorm developer People Can Fly, will continue to explore opportunities outside of the immensely popular Gears franchise.

Nader says:

If it had been made for the PC from the start and then converted to other platforms, it might have been a whole different deal. It felt "gamepad"-like to play with keyboard and mouse, not any good at all. As well, the Microsoft Live Games login really ruined this game for me.

Nookadum says:

Maybe if they didn't use that God damn Games for Windows Live and their fucking REQUIRED login system maybe it would've sold more.

And ADDING jump. It's a fast-paced FPS for fucking sakes.

Abe Froeman says:

It needed a PvP multiplayer component. If they had that with the ability to just lasso environmental weapons it would have been fun.

Joey says:

All that would have lead to was people staying away from environmental traps, just like in Gears where people just avoided going into parts of the map that would get flooded with immulsion.

I have no idea what would have help this game, but I don't think a MP component was the answer. Chances are, it would have been a dead scene by now.

Craig Fairfax says:

I got this game for 10 bucks when it first came out. I wasn't actually interested in it when I got it so took me forever to get around to actually playing it, but once I did I found it to be quite enjoyable. Shame their wont be another one.

FrozenIpaq says:

For the full retail price I wouldn't suggest buying it but at anything below $40 would be a steal. I didn't like the demo all that much, didn't think it showed off the game's strong points or focused on them much so I wasn't running to buy it when it came out. I did play the game however and thoroughly enjoyed it; people just need to give it a chance

x3sphere says:

Bulletstorm is pretty much the Duke Nukem everyone was waiting for.

Too bad they basically sent it to die on PC. $60 launch price, GFWL activation. Plus there still hasn't been a Steam sale for it.
