Final Fantasy XIII-2 Hits North America January 2012

by Mike Bendel on July 18, 2011 @ 4:22 pm

Square Enix has penciled in its RPG sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2 for a January 2012 launch date in North America. That puts it only a month out from the Japan release, which is due in December.

For a major Final Fantasy title, this quick of a turnaround time is a first. The localized build of Final Fantasy XIII hit US shores three months after its Japan debut.

Craig Fairfax says:

Still never finished the first one.

El Diablo says:

When this comes out I think I'll finally have a reason to dust off my ps3 and get it working again and hack it so I can play it. Other than this I can't think of any console games I am interested. Except for that other final fantasy XIII game that I don't think even exists anymore...

Abe Froeman says:

Out of all the console exclusives coming out this year, this is the only one you are interested in?

KezraPlanes says:

I hate Final Fantasy XIII. I hate it's lies, I hate everything about it... I really really do xD

But, @ GamesCom I'm going to get my hands on this and see how their "re-invented" FFXIII-2 (which seems the same crap just with a Moogle) is better than the abortion that was FFXIII.

There are much better RPGs on both 360 and PS3 play those instead.

El Diablo says:

Pretty much, yeah. I'm never interested in any of the console exclusives. All of the shooters I don't care about and dare I say, would rather play CoD over some like GoW or Killzone. Plus with Bf3 coming out that is moot anyway. I was a little interested in LA Noire but not enough to really care.

I like final fantasy games, I really enjoyed 13 and I liked the story so I am excited to try the next one. Do I think it will be anything spectacular? No, probably not. Do I think it will still be a good game, RPG and be enjoyable to play? Yes. Do I think it will be as much of an abomination as X-2? Well, I hope not but in all honesty it wouldn't surprise me if it is.

Trust me Kezra, I get it by now, you really really don't like the game for whatever reason however that doesn't make the game a bad game because YOU didn't like it. Plenty of people liked it an enjoyed it and I'm sure plenty will be playing the next one to try it and continue the story. I still don't understand why you hate it so much, did you even play it long enough to get to the part where it opens up? Either way your bias against it doesn't uninterest me in the game and I'll still be checking it out.

Edit: Then there is that new Zelda game coming out however I don't have a wii, and would not play it anyway because I just can't do the motion controls. So yeah this is pretty much the only exclusive I'm interested in plus the other XIII if it ever comes out.

KezraPlanes says:

Oh trust me, I did. I beat the damn game. I've dedicated two huge posts on deconstructing the game in all it's design flaws on my blog.

My main gripe is that it was promoted using a bunch of lies. It's not an RPG, it's not epic (it's more pathetic), it's linear as all hell and the "opened up part" is just a large corridor designed to make you think the game opens up. Story is cliché, characters are offensive stereotypes and the ending is straight out of bad girl fanfic. And even worse, this was Square's attempt at remaking FFVII.

I could go on for days but I won't, suffice to say the only reason this game had any sucess is because it's got Final Fantasy slapped on it, and Square has enough name not to get bad reviews on mainstream websites like IGN and Gamespot.

El Diablo says:

Why does every FF game have to be a "VII remake" VII is the most overated game of the series, it isn't even that great. You don't like it because it was different and didn't follow the same things every other one did. You may not like it but it was by no means a terrible game or "abortion".

KezraPlanes says:

Can you distort my words any more? I never said I want a FFVII remake, I'm one of those that opposes that idea. The past is the past and should be left there. But Final Fantasy XIII is Square's attempt at a VII remake, because pretty much everything between the two games can be tied in.

Enlightened? What is people and thinking I only want old remakes? o.O If I hate something it's not because I want the past, it's because I feel it's crap.

And I agree, VII isn't that good (I prefer VI, and it's re-imagining, LOst Oddysee) but it's damn better than XIII. VII is when it all started going downhill tbh

Craig Fairfax says:

There is no such thing as overrated.

january39 says:

I have one word for it...Linear (possibly even tedious)

x3sphere says:

This. I've always felt VI was the pinnacle of the FF franchise. I've played through it about 5 times at least, and it still holds up to this day. VII was good but not on the same level.

As for XIII, I was bored out of my mind playing it. Didn't care about the characters, plot was predictable, battle system was incredibly convoluted. Got about 10 hours in before I decided to call it quits. Dragon Quest IX is the only good RPG Square Enix has released in recent times.
