DICE: No Plans for Battlefield 3 Mod Tools

by Mike Bendel on July 5, 2011 @ 2:50 pm

There’s no question that the ability to mod is always a crowd pleaser when it comes to PC titles. Unfortunately, as it stands – Battlefield 3 will ship without any mod tools, according to EA Europe VP Patrick Söderlund.

Söderlund pinned the decision down to the complexity of Frostbite’s inner workings, the engine that powers BF3. He feels the steep learning curve associated with setting up destruction in maps and leveraging other engine facets will present too much of a challenge to your average hobbyist.

“As of now, we are not going to make any modding tools,” said Söderlund in an interview with German site GameStar.

“If you look at the Frostbite engine, and how complex it is, it’s going to be very difficult for people to mod the game, because of the nature of the set up of levels, of the destruction and all those things… it’s quite tricky. So we think it’s going to be too big of a challenge for people to make a mod.”

Isn’t a challenge half the fun of modding? Whatever the case, DICE has its reasons, we suppose. However, if enough folks show interest, perhaps they will change their mind. It wouldn’t be the first time.

Ouch... that just stung the hearts of MANY PC gamers.

Ecko says:

Wow, what a way to write off the intelligence of your fans. "Its too complex!" Please, many of hack stuff and build stuff for fun not because its easy, but because it is hard.

Joey says:

There's literally nothing PC gamers wont fucking bitch about. NOTHING.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. Vote with your dollar.

El Diablo says:

Were there any PC gamers "fucking bitching" about it or are you just saying what you say anytime some feature isn't present/removed from a PC game? I mean at least let there be bitching before you bitch about it.

Besides is it that big of a deal to you that people say "aww man, it sucks we don't get that in this game even though we had it in others, so much for making our own stuff"? I mean why wouldn't you be bummed there will not be player mods? That adds such a huge part to the game, so many more things you can do than play the 5-10 maps that the company gives you. There's literally no reason to say "Hey, that's a good thing I like what they are doing here" and every reason to say "Aw man I hoped we would have that that kind of sucks oh well".

Anyway I'm glad console games have reworked peoples brains to actually be happy receiving less in their games for their money and being upset at a game not having something just means PC gamers are whiny bitches who want free stuff. /shrug will never make sense to me.

You guys are going off-topic, but since I'm a nice guy, I'll create a thread for discussion of PC vs. Consoles (since there is quite some interesting discussion to be had).

Thank you for your time xD

Joey says:

Yeah, it's called the internet, look around. In fact, look exactly one post above me. And guess what? No body ever makes you buy a game. Ever. This game has no mods? If that matters to me, they don't get my money. It's not like they shipped a game with mod tools and patched them out. They're telling you literally months in advance that this game will not in fact have this feature.

Did I say you should be happy with getting less? No. But from what I can tell, no body has purchased this game. No body, as of this date, has been ripped off. If ANYBODY complains about this, and then buys the game, they should be kicked in the fucking cunt.

eldiablov says:

Seriously, the incessant whining from the hardcore super-gamer camp is so dull now.

El Diablo says:

Is complaining about other people complaining any better and does it somehow put you above them?

Abe Froeman says:

Yes.

Craig Fairfax says:

It put's him in the same exact category as everybody else on the internet.

Robby says:

I see why the majority of PC gamers get mad. They feel like since they play on PCs, they should be provided with things like mod tools and when they don't, they throw a bitchfit.

Again, not all PC gamers, but the majority that I've run into.

MenaceInc says:

While all the whine is certainly tiring, I do think that DICE may have shot themselves in the foot. It may not matter when the game is released but in a number of years when BF3 is old hat, it may hurt sales then.

There are quite a number of old games now that still sell based on the mods available alone. Warcraft 3 for example has a mod you may have heard of called Defense of the Ancients. It's very popular and even has a sequel on the way.

Other mods such as Goldeneye: Source and ZombieMod used to sell copies of Half-Life/Counterstrike. Mods do help extend the potential lifespan of a game.

Hell, even Project Reality helps sell Battlefield 2 to this day.
