Portal 2 Sells 3 Million Copies

As if anyone expected otherwise, Portal 2 has become quite the hit for Valve. The company revealed during a Games For Change talk in New York City that the puzzle centric title has sold 3 million copies to date. While we would’ve liked to see a breakdown of digital versus retail sales, unfortunately Gabe Newell didn’t get that specific.

Regardless, the 3 million tally is an impressive feat. For comparison’s sake, the original outing has sold 4 million copies to date. With plenty of DLC on the way, plus Valve’s efforts towards promoting community maps and inevitable Steam discounts, it’s a safe bet that the sequel will eventually top that.

I think it sold because the first one was awesome. Portal 2 seemed too easy and since I already played it before, it lost that "wow this is new" phase.

Abe Froeman says:

I agree to a certain extent, but I thought the sequel added enough new puzzle elements to remain very fresh.

Dan says:

Yeah same, I thought throughout it that Valve focused more on the story than they did on the gameplay.

i'd have to agree in that the second one felt easier than the first, but then again, portal really only has 2 or 3 playthoughs before you've memorized every chamber unfortunately. still, i enjoyed every single minute, so this game defiantly deserves the 3 million copy's it's sold. can't wait for the dlc=-)

Robby says:

I did enjoy the game however, just thought that it wasn't up there with the first one.

hush404 says:

Good for them, the game is Ace.

ShadowmanX5 says:

I think they are two really different games :\ Portal was, at heart, a Puzzle game. Where as Portal 2 was more an adventure game, with a puzzle game within that. The fact that most of the puzzles were surrounded by Portal-repel-ant wall made all the chambers easy to figure out rather than the pissing about portal wherever you want from the first game :P. I couldn't stand the scenes of "Search the incredibly detailed environment for the one portal spot" -_- that got on my nerves. But tho co-op and hopefully DLC user generated maps will keep the game very fresh :)

Joey says:

Game is piss easy, but so was the first one. I come to Portal for comedy... And GODDAMN IT does it deliver. Stephen Merchant is great.
