PS3 Firmware 3.61 Goes Live, PSN Restoration Has Begun

by Mike Bendel on May 14, 2011 @ 4:21 pm

Update #3: Reports are coming in that PSN service has resumed in the U.S. Northeast. It’s finally back, folks.

Update #2: PSN will return very soon, according to an update posted over at SCEE’s official website. Today Sony launched a “phased restoration” of services by region, with North America and Europe first in line. We’ll update when it starts showing signs of life.

Update: Sony’s announced that the update is merely a prep for when PSN returns.  The network still remains offline, unfortunately.

We’ve just been informed that PS3 firmware 3.61 has gone live. According to Sony, this firmware re-enables PSN access and should prompt a password change on connect. We’re installing the update now to see if the network is live.

FINALLY

Edit: "An error occurred during the download operation. A connection to the server could not be established."

Oh fuck off.

Craig Fairfax says:

Tease!!!!!

KezraPlanes says:

Finally some signs of life xD

x3sphere says:

Seems it could be back up within a few hours, SCEE's page says they've begun restoring services for NA and Europe.

KezraPlanes says:

At least for the US... IT HAS BEGUN! (don't ask xD)

TeamOverload says:

Let me download the update here after 2 tries. Signing in still no go though, tells me I need to change my password, then gives me an error when I hit OK to do so, network is down for maintenance. Soon though, soon!

FrozenIpaq says:

Should be up for you TO soon. Service has been restored to the Northeast in US.

TeamOverload says:

Yup, all good here. Password is changed and things are well. Just synced my trophies :D Now to try Netflix (even though they said it won't be up until later, I don't see why something that doesn't even really rely on PSN wouldn't work...)

Netflix is a go, life is good :)

Bran says:

Like your avatar?

Bizarre says:

Up in Canada, nothing here yet.

Biggy204 says:

That is why i wouldn't check now, will wait til the weekend. Btw still no service in Canada.

january39 says:

Nothing in the UK yet, got the update easy enough though.

KezraPlanes says:

In the EU not even the PS Blog is working xD

TeamOverload says:

Should be up in all of North America. PS Plus is active now..wish they would have waited for the store to be up for our free month to start counting, but ah well. Have to be grateful that we are getting anything at all, so I'll take it.

Dan says:

Gone live for the UK, everything is running smoothly, apart from trophies which aren't working at all.

january39 says:

I have no problems with trophies.

Riorio99 says:

Working fine and dandy for me in the UK, except the store, sync'd my trophies and everything.

Bizarre says:

Never recieved the email, its been about 5 hours I tried signing in and clicking the change pass but nothing.

Darkchild says:

meh, gonna jailbreak my ps3 and never update again.

Sony is dead to me after a scandal like this

KezraPlanes says:

Jailbreak for what? lol

HOnestly it sounds like you're making excuses just to jailbreak xD Just be upfront about it :P

FrozenIpaq says:

Jailbreak for linux support? That's one of the main reasons I've personally held off on updating my PS3. Although the second Uncharted 3 comes out I might have a change of heart. Seriously haven't touched my PS3 for anything other than media playback in months

KezraPlanes says:

Yeah but that's because you play everything on your 360, do you not? xD

TeamOverload says:

From what I saw when I was on custom firmware, linux support even on jailbroken consoles is very minimal at this point, not sure it's really worth it just for that. As has been being discussed in the jailbreaking thread, at this point in time the homebrew scene is pretty non-existent. Only releases that come out tend to be Backup Managers and yet another variant of the same custom firmware versions.

Hellcat says:

PSN up for Germany :)

Funny though, for my main acc. I could enter the new PWD right on the PS3, for the two others they sent a mail with a "change here" link.... o_o

Well, everything looks cool so far, friendlist is there, profile watching works, msg sending seems worky, Trophies seem cool.... just the store "is currently on maintanance" it tells me.

KurianOfBorg says:

Even though its back up I can't play MK online because I can't redeem my Kombat Pass without the Store.

El Diablo says:

I don't know the specifics as I have sort of stopped following the details of the ps3 scene, but I know about a week ago someone came out with a new CFW that allows linux and dual booting like how it originally was, and on top of that have full access to the ps3 now instead of being restricted. I'm sure you can use a PC way better if you wanted a good version of linux but from what I understand now only is linux on the ps3 (if you install the new CFW) as good as it was originally, but it's actually better and improved. Not to mention it also works on slims and consoles that didn't have otherOS support.

I did read briefly though that I think some of the older systems may not work with it which seems kind of stupid but like I said I don't know all of the details about it.

TeamOverload says:

Ah okay, that does seem better, although if it's anything like the first version that came out, it was quite the process to install. Granted if you're going to be using Linux, the process involved should still be understandable, but it's not just as easy as OtherOS was. Still a nice step in the right direction for sure, and having access to all of the PS3 should be very beneficial.

Dan says:

Seems the Japanese government aren't giving anybody access to PSN due to suspicion of more security vulnerabilities. Sucks to be them.

Bizarre says:

Fuck, I've been trying to get this e-mail to reset my pass for 2 days, nothing is coming up, anyone know how to fix this?

Dan says:

Why don't you just do it on the PS3?

Bizarre says:

I can't it says do it on the PC, I'll try again when I get home.

ultimakillz says:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/05/15/update-on-service-restoration-rollout/

just give it a bit, im sure there are tons of people waiting on emails. it will come through eventually.

NeilR says:

I reset my son's account with no problems (sub-accounts have to do by email/PC) Sorry I can't help you.

That's not what I read. I understood that they want insurances/details that everything they said they would do is both happening and satisfactory (preventative measures, customer confidence building).

ultimakillz says:

thats what i read as well:

Biggy204 says:

Im still not sure Canada got the update, as i am still waiting til the weekend as there are still "service outages" due to the over clogging on Sony's servers.

NeilR says:

Canada did get the update, I downloaded and installed the firmware update as well as updated account approx 10 hours ago. If it's bogged down right now just give it time.

karnbmx says:

PSN is back up in Australia. Time to claim my free copy of Portal 2 via Steam. :D
