Report: Crytek Lays Off 30-35 At Budapest Studio In Focus Shift

Crysis developer Crytek has reportedly axed 30-35 jobs at its Budapest studio, which is shifting focus to tablet-oriented experiences. Up until now, the studio was mainly working on Codename: Kingdoms, an Xbox 360-exclusive Kinect effort.

A source close to industry site Gamasutra said management is preparing to shrink the Kingdoms team to 30-35 workers, from 80. Described as a “sudden decision,” this comes amid a request from Codename: Kingdoms publisher Microsoft Game Studios to move development on the title to Crytek’s Frankfurt studio. Nine workers have already been laid off in the switch, according to the same source.

Budapest has been working on the title for around 2 years – with the initial unveil taking place last year at Microsoft’s E3 press briefing.  Microsoft is preparing to show it off once again at this year’s briefing, which kicks off next month on June 6.
