Sony Online Entertainment Warns Of Stolen Credit Card Numbers, Direct Debit Records

Further investigation into the external intrusion that brought down PSN a couple weeks ago has revealed that Sony Online Entertainment’s operation may have suffered a similar fate. SOE released a statement today advising customers that personal details associated with all 24.6 million accounts may have been obtained in a cyber attack.

This includes: name, address (city, state, zip, country), email address, gender, birthdate, phone number, login name and hashed password.

SOE was keen to note that this is not a “second attack,” it’s directly related to the PSN breach.

SOE is also warning customers that “approximately” 12,700 non-US credit card numbers may have been obtained in the breach. Apparently, they were stored in an “outdated” database from 2007. Additionally, about 10,700 direct debit records listing bank account numbers of certain customers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands and Spain may have been obtained as well.

For the time being, SOE has pulled the plug on all of its game servers to conduct a thorough investigation of what happened. The company is confident that its main credit card database is safe, noting that it is “in a completely separate and secured environment.”
