Blue Blur Returns In Sonic Generations

Following a teaser that surfaced earlier this month, Sega’s formally announced the next Sonic title, dubbed Sonic Generations. Poised to deliver “the definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new,” Generations is set across three defining eras that span Sonic’s storied 20-year history.

Beyond featuring a modern take on classic Sonic environments, players can switch between a 2D and 3D perspective at will in Generations.

“By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way,” said global brand director David Corless.

Hit the break for screenshots that highlight this viewpoint shifting mechanic. It’s taken more than a few botched attempts, but after all these years, we think Sega might’ve finally nailed it. Sonic Generations is due out on PS3 and Xbox 360 holiday 2011.

It would be neat if it was 2D/3D like Super Paper Mario, where you can only get in some places depending on your dimension.

For secrets it would. But I wouldnt want it to rely too heavily on that mechanic like Paper Mario does. I want this shit to be about speed.

Damn I was pretty close on my speculation.

OT: The game does look nice so far. We'll see how it plays out.

The sight of classic Sonic makes me happy. I personally did like the speed levels in previous Sonic games, it are the so-called "platform levels" that do suck (except for Sonic Adventure 1 & 2). I'm -once again- hoping they make something awesome of this :)
