You won’t need deep pockets to license Crytek’s snazzy CryEngine 3 tech. While it isn’t ready to divulge specifics, the company says its licensing tiers will be budget-friendly. In fact, co-founder Avni Yerli tells Develop that it plans to release a SDK geared towards indie devs.

In addition to that, a mod specific SDK in the works. The barrier to entry will be “very low, perhaps even free,” he says.

Well, for one thing the mod community is very important to us, and down the road will release a specific SDK for the mod community. We have a business model in mind for this – which I can’t get into details of right now – but it will be extremely user-friendly.

The barriers for entry will be very low, and perhaps even for free. Of course this will be compared to UDK and Unity and so on, but we think this sort of competition is very good for the community.

Crytek’s nearest competitor — Epic Games — offers similar deals for indie studios. Projects that gross below $50,000 are not required to front any licensing fees. Beyond that, it’s a 25 percent cut.
