Sony today announced sweeping changes to its corporate structure, revealing that PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai will take helm of the company’s realigned Consumer Products division beginning in April.

The responsibility encompasses Sony’s entire consumer electronics segment — ranging from Bravia TVs to home audio and mobile products.

In his current role, Mr. Hirai has successfully led the turnaround of the games business, expanded the PlayStation®Network – which now boasts more than 74 million registered accounts worldwide (as of March 9, 2011) — and directed the launch of Sony’s new networked service platform. In his expanded role, Mr. Hirai will extend his focus to developing a new generation of compelling products, through which Sony plans to deliver seamless and compelling entertainment experiences to consumers in both the home and mobile spaces.

Branching off from the Consumer Products division is the Professional & Device Solutions Group, which will be spearheaded by Hiroshi Yoshioka. While Howard Stringer will remain on top of the corporate ladder, this move sets the stage for Hirai to take reign in the future.
