Crysis 2 PC Demo Goes Live

by Mike Bendel on February 28, 2011 @ 8:13 pm

It’s not often this happens, but hey, we’re certainly not complaining. The long-awaited Crysis 2 PC demo, originally slated for release on March 1, is now available for your downloading pleasure — a day early. As detailed in the initial announcement, the demo gives players a sampling of two maps — the rooftop-laden Skyline and Pier 17, an open environment with limited cover opportunities.

From our brief time with the demo we’ve found it is locked to DX9, while the full game will support DX11. Despite this, it still looks fantastic. Check out a few screens after the break and grab the demo from EA’s site here.

Crysis 2 hits store shelves and digital distribution outlets on March 22 in North America.

Here's some video I captured of one of my sessions playing the beta (love using 360 controller):

Trigun says:

AWESOME, I just got my GTX 460 1GB in the mail today. So will add this to the list of things i'll be testing it against with my brothers old 8800GTS640 that I had to use because of lack of funds when I built my OH so nice and expensive i7 rig

x3sphere says:

I took a vid too:

MenaceInc says:

Ditto

FrozenIpaq says:

We should all get together some time today and play a few rounds

Abe Froeman says:

This went live on the 360 today as well right?

FrozenIpaq says:

Yeah it went "re-live" on the 360 as well (was available last month too, although this version should have both maps fully unlocked)

El Xando says:

I just played a couple of games having played the 360 one back when it was first available and completing the single player from the leak; it's super cool. Just played an awesome game where I went 21-7 and got all the killstreaks in about 5 seconds :P

Everyone add "ElXando" on it :)

Also, did you all use FRAPS to record?

FrozenIpaq says:

I did and I'm pretty sure everyone else did as well

MenaceInc says:

Looks dam nice. What output settings do you use to render?

El Xando says:

1920x1080 30fps, 8Mbps Sony AVC .mp4 :)

FrozenIpaq says:

Anyone up for a game in an hour or so on the PC? Still not sure how to go about adding friends though. Couldn't see an in-game option and the website is down still

El Xando says:

Pooooossibly, if I'm still awake. Is your gamespy name not FrozenIpaq?

The demos friends system is really buggy, half the time friends just disappear if you add them or people you add never get the invites.

FrozenIpaq says:

It uses gamespy? Logged in with MyCrysis account and that was FrozenIpaq. Although if I have a gamespy account it too should be FrozenIpaq or Frozenwashcloth

EDIT: Just accepted your request

El Xando says:

I believe it's gamespy, it says it in the menu though it was confusing...

Either way I've tried adding FrozenIpaq twice and invite disappeared both times :P Try adding me I guess. Only person I have so far is MenaceInc.

FrozenIpaq says:

Yeah that's odd. I accepted your request and saw nothing after that. Then I sent 3 friend requests, reloaded the game, and the requests were gone

El Xando says:

Yeah... hopefully the full game isn't like this, but I slightly feel it may be :P

FrozenIpaq says:

Being this close to release it very well might be :(

Zero says:

I'm having issues logging in. Tried using a GameSpy account, but it said my username was invalid (Penryn).

So now I'm trying to make a MyCrysis account and now the create account button won't do anything.

Sigh...

Wonder why they went with GameSpy, doesn't EA provided their own system, like the one in BFBC2?

El Xando says:

Loads of people online seem to be complaining about how "bad" this demo is and how unlike Crysis 1 it is. I don't have much experience with Crysis 1, but I fucking love this game.

People complaining about invisibility camping... it is annoying, and can happen, but isn't a particularly frequent occurance and they are still visible, and lose all their energy when they shoot you if they don't deactivate cloak before shooting...

Anyhoo, here's some screenshots, one of my best game so far, and 2 of my current stats:

MenaceInc says:

Me and ElXando kicking ass and taking names. We made the other team ragequit

On a related note, the voice chat in the Crysis demo is godawful. Not the actual speech codec but the fact that it's disabled by default and the output level is way too low compared to the rest of the game.

El Xando says:

Mmmmm, we had some pretty damn good k/ds :D

Yeah the voice chat is horrible... Even with all other volumes on lowest and voice on full I couldn't hear MenaceInc if I was shooting when he tried to talk...

Hence why he should get Skype ;)

FrozenIpaq says:

Just need me for the dream team :p

El Xando says:

Yeah :D

I accidentally deleted you earlier because if you click on someone then try to click "Back" it thinks you press Remove friend and doesn't ask you to confirm it... I readded you though :)

MenaceInc says:

Then the matches would barely last a few minutes D:

I wonder how much customisation Crytek/Free Radical are going to allow for the servers.

El Xando says:

Hopefully none until the hundreds of issues are sorted :P

Zero says:

Crytek does intend to expand the options screen, phew.

I have been playing this and it's so incredibly fun. Fans of Call of Duty will feel right at home with this.

The graphics are also sublime, even at the lowest Gamer setting. Pulling a nice 80fps on my machine.

Netcode is amazing, they're aren't any Aussie servers, so I've been playing on East Coast servers, even with 400ms latency shots hit and kills register.

Still can't use my GameSpy or MyCrysis accounts, but a dummy one with no numbers in the username/password/email fields logs in.
