Geohot Sets Up Legal Defense Fund

by Mike Bendel on February 20, 2011 @ 12:44 am

That amusing rap aside, things aren’t looking so rosy for famed iPhone and PS3 hacker George “Geohot” Hotz. While Hotz himself was hoping for a quick victory, Sony’s long-winded legal case shows no signs of letting up anytime soon. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that he’s in for the long haul. As a result, he’s now set up a defense fund to help cover court-related expenses, which are quickly piling up — currently, the total damage sits at around 10K according to Hotz.

In an update on his official site, Hotz criticizes Sony’s strong-arm tactics, in addition to outlining his intentions behind setting up the fund. Whether you like him or not, Hotz points out that consumer rights are at stake here, and we’re inclined to agree.

For those who wish to donate, hit up Geohot’s site. Otherwise, you can also help simply by spreading the word.

Regardless of your feelings about Geohot, a lot more is at stake than just him. Remember that fail0verflow are also co-defendants, who are just trying to get Linux back on the PS3.

If I had the money, I would donate.

Nader says:

Do we get our moneys back if he wins?

Cloudy says:

Any leftover funds will be donated to the EFF. But he doesn't specify what will happen if he gets legal costs back - perhaps he'll do the same, or return the donations.

Sousanator says:

I donated. This case isn't about GeoHot, it's about setting a precedent on hacking your own hardware.

Dan says:

I'd fund this if I had the cash, noble move.

Orionsaint says:

The Geohot supporters argument is I just wanna be able to add any app I want to the PS3. So let's assume this is possible. Let's also assume I'm a douche bag and wanna add an app that bans my friends. That gives me trophies for nothing. Because that's what is going to happen. You think people aren't going to exploit this feature? You may have good intentions, but that doesn't account for the millions of other people adding apps to the PS3.

Sousanator says:

Then Sony should go after those jack asses. GeoHot is not the one making backup managers, or cheating devices and has always advised against it. Why should he be the one punished by Sony?

I invite you to read this blog post by KaKaRoTo which explains the situation in a polite way

Moose says:

There are many other causes that I feel would take precedent if I were to donate to anything at all, however I do recognise the cause and I hope that it goes well for Geohot.

rianchio23 says:

i donated 100$ hope it helps =)

Josey Wales says:

LOL No, its about geo. You just donated money to a fight that cant be won. Even if Sony loses, nobody really wins.

kenshi57 says:

It really means alot if geohot wins, it doesn't make any sense if sony tells us what CAN we do with something we purchased.

I read the blog post by Kakaroto, it was extremely informative.
