Sony: Banhammer To Strike PS3 Hack Users

by Mike Bendel on February 16, 2011 @ 10:52 am

Predictability, in the interests of preserving integrity of PSN, Sony issued a statement today in which it confirms that those “running unauthorized or pirated software” are at risk being of banned. Any user detected using circumvention devices or related hacks will have their access to PSN “terminated permanently” by the almighty banhammer.

Hardly surprising to see Sony respond in this manner. It is, after all, their last line of defense with the PS3′s security essentially blown wide open.

According to Mathieulh, banned PS3 units will be greeted with a “0x8002A227″ error when attempting to access PSN.

The full statement is below.

Notice: Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers. These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions. Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws. Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently.

To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

Let's see how effective these bannings are.

TeamOverload says:

Eh, I'm not too concerned. With the level of access we have we can probably get around these bans anyways. No worries.

Riorio99 says:

Kinda glad I didn't do the hack now, but I'm willing to bet the hackers get around this pretty quickly.

Hardrive says:

Out of curiosity, how do they detect hacked consoles?

slicer4ever says:

i don't think they can detect the console is truely hacked under 3.56, but they could look at your psn logs and see if you've played any homebrew, or non white-listed games

RJC4LIFE says:

They can tell even if its spoofed to report back as 3.56 by not getting the callbacks from the firmware regardless so no getting around this until that is addressed...

Zero says:

It's mainly targeting those using bypasses for the firmware check.

It's a DNS trick which alters the packets, spoofing the firmware ID. You used to have to use a seperate PC to act as a proxy, but some homebrew tools have surfaced which allow you to do it straight from the PS3, like this.

Sousanator says:

That method still uses a proxy with a PC (you just have to flash a modified cert file).

And also, there are reports from a bunch of forums from people who haven't even been online in 3 weeks (before 3.56 came out) are getting the warning emails, so its nothing to do with the DNS method.

Since we have such deep access the worst they can do is delete your PSN account, but since they are free anyways, it's only going to effect paying customers (with cfw). I don't foresee Sonys banhammer to be as effective as Microsofts.

TeamOverload says:

Yeah, I've been online with it and played backups, and haven't received any emails, so who knows :/ running 3.55 kmeaw with PS3DNS and Charles to get on PSN.

XsavioR says:

I really have no use for sony products until they get new people running the company. The real power is the consumers , choose not to buy.

Zero says:

Didn't know where to post this, not entirely sure if the source is reliable either, but...

http://twitter.com/Computermaster/status/38027440429342720#

Credit card details for PSN transactions are potentially sent in cleartext.

x3sphere says:

Wouldn't surprise me, passwords are stored in plaintext on the HDD as well.

slicer4ever says:

in that irc log, the user who posted the example, stats a couple time, it's a fake, as well, it seems kindof random to mention the credit card stuff like that, since a search on that log shows that "plaintext", and "credit" are only used at that point in the log.

personally, from the way the log reads, i think he was just making an example, and the person whom posted that twitter, took it the wrong way, but that's an assumption i've only made after a quick glance at the log

RJC4LIFE says:

It is legit.

slicer4ever says:

it's plaintext sent over an SSL connection, so not exactly just plaintext:

Josey Wales says:

Cant you just make a new PSN account and move on?

x3sphere says:

As I understand it they ban the console ID in most cases. If you create a new account and try to sign on using the affected unit, that account is instantly flagged.

Josey Wales says:

Interestingly full of aids. Basically Sony feels that if you hack your console, you may never utilize the multiplayer of any game ever again

El Xando says:

That's what Microsoft do, too...

alukado says:

Alright , I choose to disappear from the PSN from now on.

Zero says:

..therefore making my PS3 next to useless.

No thanks, not worth it.

KezraPlanes says:

This war between PS3 and hackers is getting pathetic and idiotic. Both have done stupid sh*t and have lost any sense of reason...

Nader says:

Someone make a console ID spoofer?

Abe Froeman says:

Whatever happened to running homebrew and firmware hacks at your own risk? When MS issues a ban warning and then bans modded consoles the users are like " oh well, it was fun while it lasted. We knew the risk of playing pirated games on a flashed DVD drive."

PS3 users and Sony fans call it a "war." It doesn't make much sense to me.

KezraPlanes says:

Took the workds right out of my mouth. Hackers on the PS3 feel entitled to the right of doing whatever the hell they want including banning random users from the PSN just to attack Sony.

x3sphere says:

I call bullshit on this... haven't seen anyone release concrete info. A thread went up on PSX-Scene earlier but it was deleted.

As for spoofing a console ID it's probably possible but you would need another valid ID to do it as Sony validates by a whitelist.

KezraPlanes says:

I dunno if it's bullshit or not. But if it is, I say it's pretty damn wrong of them (whoever is doing it).

Josey Wales says:

I dont know man, considering half of the "hacking" is playing legal games and using legit applications and being punished for it is a bit off the wall from the get go.

I understand theres a EULA in place and most people forget it but, EULA's tend to basically remove all power and rights from the End User and we all agree with it. Not to mention - that the EULA isnt even advertised on electronic products, you have to research and find the EULA before hand otherwise you agree blindly.

The whole topic is a bit heavier than just for the fun of hacking.

Zero says:

One exists, it allows a user with a banned console and psn account to go back online by using another console ID and PSN account.

However, the masqueraded PSN account would get banned and another Console ID and PSN account would be needed, they also have to be valid, existing IDs.

Downright malicious, so I'm not posting a link to the screencap of the PSX-SCENE thread.

Brad says:

Got a email probably cause I jumped on PSN with that 3.41 payload that lasted a few days. Other then that I haven't really been on. Not a big lose for myself but still deciding how to go about this either update or keep backups dunno

TeamOverload says:

Still haven't been banned and I'm not sure anyone has been able to test this yet, but: http://www.ps3news.com/PS3-Hacks/PS3-Unban-and-Anti-ban-Methods-for-Console-ID-and-Sign-In/

Robby says:

Well one reason could be because xbox consoles are incredibly cheap to get and mod.

I can buy 2 used xbox consoles and mod them for the price of 1 used ps3.

Craig Fairfax says:

This is one of the reasons why I'm not modding my ps3. (the other being I value my warranty) How dare Sony punish people for stealing their shit.

El Diablo says:

Just wondering, will you get an email if you get banned? Is it safe to assume that as long as you don't get an email saying you're banned you're good?

I stopped going online on my ps3 maybe 2 weeks before this happened and don't plan on going on again so I'm hoping I don't get anymore emails and I'm safe = \.

TeamOverload says:

From what I've heard only SCEE sounds out the emails.

Robby says:

Their is a similar method for the xbox which I'm not sure was proven to work. You just null your console and profile ID's and in theory there is nothing to ban.

Also, apparently a program has come out that can unban your console and ban other ps3 consoles in the process, even legit ones own by someone else.
