Clint Mansell Scoring Mass Effect 3

by Mike Bendel on February 9, 2011 @ 5:58 pm

Renowned film composer Clint Mansell broke the news in a recent interview with The Quietus that he is scoring the third installment in BioWare’s sci-fi RPG franchise, Mass Effect 3.

Mansell’s works include Moon and more recently Black Swan. Jack Wall composed the orchestral-heavy score for Mass Effect 1 and its sequel.  There’s no word on if we’ll see a collaborative effort between him and Mansell, however.

Further, Mansell shared his thoughts on the contrast between composing for video games versus traditional films:

“With something like Mass Effect you’re more like a DJ, with all these elements. You’ve got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent. You’ve got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts. You can bring the pain when required.”

Mass Effect 3 is due out holiday 2011.

His soundtrack for Moon was brilliant, this was great news.

Abe Froeman says:

I thought the guy who did the first two games did a pretty solid job. I hope this Mansell doesn't drop the ball.
